September 6, 200916 yr Just got the bird today, actually a short time ago.Having just sat in it having loaded up the tutorial flight, I got as far as turning on the batteries then GPU. Then sat in amazement looking around and pushed a few buttons. This is amazing what you guys have created here. The immersion is very believable. This is the first time that the experience has been this profound for me. The MD-11 was very close to this, not quite this deep tho.My hat (covering my bald head) is off to you folks and a very hearty thank you.I hope to get to know this aircraft in a way that allows to experience the depth that has been put into this.I feel almost nervous to try an engine start, seeing as some have fried a few engines. Makes me rethink my level of competence.I had a hard time waiting for this bird and now I can see why. Thanks for letting me rambleOK...I said almost speechless...LOLOut. Chad Dillon aka: Dusty (PAEN)
September 6, 200916 yr I feel almost nervous to try an engine start, seeing as some have fried a few engines. Makes me rethink my level of competence.Don't be afraid to fry. :( For us pyros, it's almost satisfying, lol. But at the same time a rush of "OMG what have I done?!" sweeps through you. I must say, this has been the most 'feel there' experience I've had with a sim thus far. I fried one, and that was my last. It's amazing to hear the TPE-331's replicated so well; I work around Fairchild SA-227's at my job, which use the same powerplants as the J41, and the resemblance is uncanny to hear in the sim. I have always wondered why hearing them was so different than anything else, like with a free turbine. Now when I hear them start up at night, I know exactly what's going on throughout the startup and shutdown process. Before diving into learning about the J41, I also never knew that the Mitsubishi MU-2 used the TPE-331's as well. But the TPE-331's on the MU-2 sounded different and louder in person than those than the Metroliner III or the J41...much louder. It was like Satan's vacuum cleaner. And it was awesome. Lol.Anyway...I digress. Still blown away, and still confused as hell. Time to read through the tutorial about 6 more times before I figure out the flow of everything.
September 6, 200916 yr Author Hey bro, great to hear from you. How are things?Yeah man, I just fried the #1 engine. When the tutorial said pull back into beta sloooowwwwlly, it meant it! LOL.. #2 went fine without a whimper or explosion.I was determined not to fry one. Oh well. Time to go at it again. I too am determined not to torch one off again. Got my a** chewed and am a little sore @ the moment. This bird is just...well..amazing. I really feel I am in there and doing it.I forgot how exactly the TPR's sound on the metro III's. Pen Air fly those up here. And I have been on several. Been a couple years tho.Touchy engines for sure..wow.Great to hear from ya and thanks again for honoring my request for that MD-11 post.Take care & keep em kewl eh? We will learn...yes we will.Later Khaos Chad Dillon aka: Dusty (PAEN)
September 6, 200916 yr Hey bro, great to hear from you. How are things?Great to hear from ya and thanks again for honoring my request for that MD-11 post.Doing mighty fine. :( I've got something to smile about these days - I am scheduled to start flight training in 3 days at a local flight academy. I'm projected to complete my pilot's license within 2 months, and that'll lay the groundwork for the future, so I'm excited...No problem on the MD-11 post, it was my pleasure. When I get the chance one day, I'll be sure to finish the rest. Glad you enjoyed it. :(Take care & keep em kewl eh? We will learn...yes we will.To quote Top Gun: "A good pilot is compelled to evaluate what's happened, so he can apply what he's learned."
September 6, 200916 yr Commercial Member Gents-It is important to note that the actual TPE-331 is not NEARLY so prone to overtemp in beta. That overtemp behavior comes from the fact that whomever programmed the turoprop "engine model" at Microsoft had nary a clue how they really work...As such we've had to overlay control logic on top of the MSFS model- and it has a few quirks that we simply could not get rid of...Oh to have access to that busted, broken, poorly implemented, section of code in FSX. :-)The remainder of the engine behavior is pretty good... it is just the transition in/out of beta that we really wish could be imrpoved. As for those MU2s.... yes- satans tornado for sure. The Turbocommander airplanes all use the 331 also- but aren't quite as resonant as the MU2. I have always suspected it has to do with the prop on the MU.... Would be interesting to find out if the gearing ratios are the same on the MU as the 690A/B, JS3200, JS4100, etc... I bet they are- which takes us back to the prop.... Robert S. September 6, 200916 yr Author @ Khaos, congrats and have a great time.Robert, thank you for the heads up. I have seen noted here and in other places the FS turboprop modeling is jacked. IMO you guys have done a great work in overcoming as best as possible.Thank you guys again...grinning.Hey Robert, while you are here...my moving map is not...What did I do wrong?Great quote Khaos. September 6, 200916 yr So the real airplane is not so unforgiven? Yesterday I was thinking that real j41 pilots must be allways nervous when turining the engines on!Lol yesterday I fried about 5 engines and I couldn't see what I was doing wrong but when I eventually made it I was so so happy! Already logged a few hours on the j41, mostly vfr playing with the engines to see how the aircraft handles, now I'm going to start with the FMS learning part ;).Great plane guys!Carlos Domingos
September 6, 200916 yr Author That's a good one Carlos...lol :( (about the being nervous part, not you toasting a few engines)As for the moving map "anomaly"...guess it figured itself out?!I don't know...working now tho.I too had better success after killing one engine. Did not do it again. My FSUIPC did something weird after landing. My throttles were jumping around all over the place, kept getting a red warning light and config dinger.Had to recalibrate my reverse/throttles in FSUIPC, then she settled down. What a handful this plane is and I love it. Chad Dillon aka: Dusty (PAEN)
September 6, 200916 yr I also have a problem with the map not moving :S, guess I'm doing something wrong in the FMC maybe? I'ts completly different from the "fmc's" (I know that's not the airbus correct name) I'm used to (airbus only). This aircraft is teaching me a lot about a world I've never tried before!Best Regards!Carlos Domingos
