JS41 VNAV question

Featured Replies

I can't figure out how to input SIDs in the FMS VNAV page properly... Take for example MARIA2G SID, EPWA runway 29. The charted procedure has 4 waypoints and an altitude limit of 5k ft up to final waypoint MARIA, but ATC always gives a higher clearance right after departure so for example you can expect FL100 at MARIA. I would like to type it into VNAV page but I can't change SID altitude restrictions, they don't even get highlighted. Any suggestions?

The VNAV is an advisory capability only, and not often used in actual operations. I don't think it provides much in the way of climb constraints, and only non-conditional descent constraints. The VNAV DATA must first be intialized (lower right LSB on VNAV pg 1/1) before the VNAV fix list becomes useful. I usually do not intialize VNAV until enroute.

Piotr,It's possible to enter SID/DP VNAV restrictions, though as Dan mentioned, it's all "advisory only". You'll have to set the FD mode in IAS or VS to manually meet targets.Make sure you've entered your flight plan, and selected it as the ACTIVE FPL. On the NAV page, confirm the FR and TO waypoints to activate the first leg of the flight plan. Go to the VNAV page, and select VNAV DATA. Enter your cruise altitude and confirm the other information on the page. Then press the NXT key and look at VNAV 2/X page ("X" depends on how long your FP is). Use the the right Line Select Keys to highlight the altitude for the desired waypoint. Enter the crossing restriction and press ENTER. The waypoint name should change color, and the VNAV 1/X page will now show the first fix with an altitude constraint as the Vertical TO waypoint. As an aside, if you're loading the DP from the DEPARTURE prompt on the FPL page, the altitude should already be set correctly as they're pulled from the database. One of the few things that the VNAV is good for during climbout, is the Climb Gradient. This is handy dandy for those insteresting Obstacle DP's that require minimum climb gradients. Regards,Nick
