Advice on Video Card

Featured Replies

Sorry Mod I just noticed I have posted to the wrong forum could you be so kind as tomove it to the correct one for me, I'm sorry should have paid more attention.I have a Asus P5B Motherboard which supports 1066 FSB but using an E6750 CPU whichsupports a 1333 FSB. This combo seems to run fine but there is always a nag aboutthe loss of speed due to the front side bus of 1333 not being supported. My Video cardis a Ge Force 9600GT with a 1Gb Memory.I do not wish to re-install all my flight simulation stuff, so I'm asking what I should doto increase my FPS? at present am using FS9.1 and have it locked at 25 FPS. UsingFlight Ontario's high end scenery like Hamilton I have severe stutters as I look towardthe buildings on the airfield, it would be nice to have it smooth.I was considering buying the Nvidia GTX285 at a whopping 345 Euro's from the localcomputer shop, would this be a worthwhile upgrade, remembering I do not wishto spend days re-installing everything. If all else fails then I guess I will have to bite the bullet and do an install, but I reallywant to avoid that as the sim is running fine except for some really high end scenerywhich taxes the system a little bit.Any ideas from the hardware guru's would be appreciated and grateful for, thanks.

A faster video card will not help your FS9 frame rate. You need a faster CPU, which you can either purchase in the form of a Core 2 Duo E8600 (if your motherboard supports the 45nm chips), or you can overclock your existing CPU.

Thanks TechguyMacC I thought it would have been my video card as I know it's not exactly top of the line only having 64 core processors, which is why I looked at the GTX285. So I'll take you advice and go for the E8600 core 2 duo. Thanks

I don't think the GTX285 will help much. You need a faster CPU, faster memory, and most likely an x64 O/S.That price is outrageous!

Yes Malta is a small Island and a captive market, we can shop around the EU but by the time you have]paid for postage and packaging etc, you may as well buy locally, unless of course you have relativesin other countries who are coming on holiday or something. But for most electrical bits and pieces wedo pay over the top.So looks like a change of mobo as well as cpu, because not sure if the a vanilla ASUS P5B will accepta 45nm CPU. A change of Mobo will mean a complete install.

Your motherboard supports 45nm dual-core CPUs, according to user reports around the net. You may need to update your BIOS, but other than that there's no need to change any other hardware.

Hi TechguyMacC, I also saw some user reports that indeed said it did support 45nm and that a BIOS update was probably needed tofor the board to reach 1333 Mhz, I hate updating BIOS, always afraid of messing up the firmware chip. Anyway I'll think about itfor a while, maybe I will just have to upgrade the mobo and Cpu and re-install the sim again. Thanks everyone.
