Haze at ground level

Featured Replies

I have an ongoing issue with FS9 when it comes to cloud layers. I use the Active sky 6.5 addon for my weather.I find when I am approaching an airport, just before I land (roughly 500 feet above the ground) I always pass through a cloud/visibilty layers, where it goes from a realistic 'haze' to no haze in an instant. It is as if the weather or cloud layers do not extend all the way to ground level. I find this really unrealistic and wondered if there is a way to force the haze or cloud layer (whatever creates the effect) all the way to ground level.I have seen loads of FS9 videos and FSX for that matter, and it seems to be a common problem. Does any one know of a setting or trick to force layers down to ground level so this does not happen? Many thanks for your help!Jimbo

I dont have the same probolem as you but a quick fix is a reg version of fsuipc and set the vis limit to 10 miles.

Thanks mate - I've tried this and it doesn;t seem to make any difference. I probably didn't describe the problem very accurately. I have noticed that the the haze only disappears aropund the airport scenery (add on) not the surrounding default scenery. Its as if the airport when viewed at a certain height has no haze, and everything else does. I hope that makes sense. I expect it is an issue with FS9 but I wondered if there is a way round it. Thanks again for you helpJimbo

I use FSMETAR which I have to say is impressive in the way it interprets the weather reports. Cloud is much more dense and TCB's are properly displayed. You may have heard that recently in Sicily they have had almost two weeks of seriously bad weather: flooding, thunderstorms etc. etc. The airport at Palermo "Punta Raisa" having to be closed three times!!!! FSMETAR uses both the unregistered and registered versions of FSUIPC. The registered version allows weather to be changed gradually in a more realistic way. Otherwise the weather changes instantly causing "overspeed" warnings etc. In the real world when you see haze from a distance it always appears relatively translucent in that one can often see with reasonable clarity objects on the ground etc. BUT as you approach the haze boundary visibility drops to almost nothing. Any hang glider or paralider pilot will confirm this. There is one problem with FS9 which I believe is insurmountable and that is, that quite often from a height one sees dense haze slopping around valleys like white soup. I have never seen or found a fix for this. It is most unrealistic.PS Two negative things to say about FSMETAR!1. Clouds viewed from ground level often appear to be oversized and out of scale. Perhaps a perspective problem.2. It is a big frame rate hit!Vololiberista

Sounds interesting I might try it - do you have the same problem as me when you approach an airport? It is as if add on airport scenery has its own weather system! From a distance the airport scenery and surrounding scenery blend in well together because of the 'haze' effect (I think its haze) but this dissapears from the airport scenery on approach, but remains outside it. Its a problem with all my add on airport, but NOT default airports. Very strange and unrealistic.

I use AS 6.5 and have limited visibility if the METAR calls for it on the ground including add-ons I have. In its options in the Visibility section I have Visibility Smoothing, Enforce Visibility Limits, Fog Layer Generation, and Depict FS Haze Layer checked, and Disable Visibility Graduation unchecked. You can also check your weather/visibility settings in FSUIPC making sure you do not conflict with instructions from AS 65.If you do not have it I recommend you update to FSUIPC 3.93 from here. Backup your current versions first by copying your fsuipc.dll and fsuipc.ini to a separate folder not under FS9:http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.htmlYour registration should remain intact.

Thanks Ron, I'll try those settings and download the new version of FSUIPC - when I get back home I'll post a couple of screen shots to illustrate my problem better. It would be good to hear whether you or other simmers have the same issue. Cheers

Here are before and after shots to illustrate the problem - it only seems to happens around add on airports. In the after shot, you can clearly see the boundary around the airport scenery where the haze ends. At a higher altitude the haze covers both add on and default scenery but as you get closer it suddenly disappears at the airport, but remains outside. It ruins the sense of immersion for me.The after shot was taken at dusk when the problem is more prenounced. Does anyone else have this isse and has maybe found a way round it?Cheers
