October 6, 200916 yr I've noticed that an increasing number of add-on scenery developers advise storing scenery files outside Fs9 / Fs 2K2, and creating a seperate add-on sceneryfolder on the hard drive. Can anybody tell me why this is and what the benefits [ if any ] are ?Thank you in anticipation.Stuart....UK
October 6, 200916 yr Stuart,I believe the developers might suggest you put in a seperate folder (seperate from the default 'AddOn Scenery' folder) and not necessarily in a seperate partition or seperate hard drive. I do this. I made a folder under main FS9 folder and called it 'AddOn Scenery CB'. CB are my initials, but you can call it 'AddOn Scenery 2009', or whatever. You could even get carried away and make a folder for 'USA' (ie: 'AddOn Scenery USA'), then for Europe, S. America, Australia, etc. Then under those 'different' folders you can further sort by City (ie: 'AddOn Scenery USA\California\Los Angeles'. Then, of course, under 'Los Angeles' you would have a 'Scenery' folder (with bgl's) and a 'Texture' folder IF NEEDED (ie: DON'T make texture folder if it is not needed) for the BMP's (if they are provided). Then when you go 'activate' that scenery, you are actually telling FS9 where you put the scenery so FS9 can find it via the path it makes to your files. That is why you COULD put scenery in a different partition or different hard drive. The act of 'activation' is simply telling FS9 where to go look for that scenery, and it will find it, no matter where it is at, as long as you TELL it where to look. Simple. So, the purpose of even a simple, run-of-the-mill, folder for your OWN add-on sceneryies is to prevent cluttering and avoid duplication of a bgl's (which will mess your sim up-and does happen). Simple as that. You can't have 2 bgl's for the same area. After everything is 'lumped' together it will be hard to find the fix to the inevitable 'ERROR' you will get. Why? Because the bgl can be for the same area, but be named different. The 'default' AddOn Scenery (and sub folders 'Scenery' and 'Texture' CAN REMAIN EMPTY and that is totally OK! Make your own scenery folders to keep scenery files seperate from other scenery, which will allow you to delete that scenery (via the 'Scenery Library' options from main page), after which you can remove the folder. Neat, eh? (Copy then print this info out via notepad and save for reference-it's SIMPLE, really). Good luck.Chuck BNapamule
October 7, 200916 yr Author Thanks Chuck,I will try this method, as I :( dread the day when I have to re-install MSFS because I've gone over the top with add-ons !Stuart
October 7, 200916 yr I actually have all of my scenery with the exception of "base" on a seperate hard drive from where my FS is installed. I swear my program started running better when I did this and the only rationale I can come up with is that you have two drives working for you where before there was just one.LouP
