Challenging approaches in New Zealand - where?

Featured Replies

I want to do some virtual flying in New Zealand. I do like challenging approaches. "Challenging" meaning difficult terrain, procedures, or short runways. Not really weather, because I believe it is hard to simulate the extreme wind conditions one can have for instance at Wellington (I use ActiveSky, and if someone can tell me how to put the settings so that I have Wellington-like winds, then I'd go with that as well). So far I have found Queenstown as a fun approach. Anything else out there you can recommend? It should be doable at least in a B1900-sized plane. Thanks!

Suggest you fly over the hills from Wellington [say] into Nelson [ian Warren's software] onto Runway2 or Milford Sound from either end [Lawrie Roache's software]

I agree! Hey, here's another thought...There are a bunch of New Zealand airports available which are made with ez scenery objects. The airports are simply beautiful...works of art. The designer made some of them so they specifically fit into a "NZ Topo Scenery" and blend with whatever ground textures are underneath it based on that landclass. So if you're not running the "NZ Topo Scenery", some of the airports become extremely challenging. There might be autogen houses, trees, and sometimes cars in the middle of the runways and taxi ways! The trick then becomes flying over a house that is situated 1/3 of the way down a runway and see if you can land without clipping it! Or taking off over a 90ft eucalyptus tree sitting on the end of a 2000ft runway. Now that's challenging :)Mark
