FSX and AMD

Featured Replies

Hey everyone, Just looking for some information and this is the best place to come I believe. I currently run FS9 pretty well on my AMD Phenom II Duel core 3.1 Ghz black edition AM3 processor + 4 Gb Ocz DDR2 OCZ ram + 9500GT 1gb Graphics card.I can fun FS9 pretty well getting 30-40FPS in most places with anything I throw at it with scenery weather or pay ware aircraft with AI.Recently I've installed FSX and in default aircraft I get a acceptable frame rate around 20FPS which is a big step down but it's still flyable, I've been putting off moving to FSX for a long time but now I really want to make the step finally. This Christmas I will be buying a new 22" monitor and a GTX260 or GTX275. I was just wondering with the new graphics card monitor etc maybe a bit of an over clock on my processor would I be able to run FSX to an acceptable level I read about everyone using i5's or i7's but I've just built this pc and do not wish to build another one just months after building this one.I would like to know of any users flying FSX using an AMD phenom processor either duel core or quad and what type of experience they get from them?am I doing the wrong thing trying to upgrade to FSX with my system and wasting my money? Any info would be great! Thanks again!Dan

You will definitely be able to run with great performance. The 9500GT is not a great card honestly, and it is a bottleneck to FSX, even though FSX is greatly CPU bound. It still has to perform many shader functions on the graphics card. I run a Phenom 9550 overclocked to 3 GHz which is far past 9950 speeds (the only difference between the first generation 9 series is unlocked multipliers, cache, etc is the same) and I get great performance. There are also some PMDG with AMD videos on youtube and many get great performance.Look @ these threads:http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?s=&...t&p=1669670http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=267300

Thanks for the reply, so the duel core I currently have will do ok for now running FSX with the new graphics card? I wasnt able to find any videos on youtube are you able to link me to any? that would be great!I'm sure the GTX260 will do me fine, I hear that the Nvidia cards are better with FSX would you say the card I'm aiming for is the best for my system? or maybe a radeon counterpart. Thanks againDan

Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you were on a quad core, such as the Phenom II X4 920 or something overclocked. Which model are you running? I think what you have should probably suffice.
Check his channel for specs. He upgraded his PC to an AMD Phenom II X4 920, and was running an overclocked 9550 before. I'm not sure if that video was with the PII or the original phenom, but either way it is still smooth, especially with the weather conditions.

I'm using a AMD Phenom II Duel core 3.1Ghz AM3 550 Black edition I could overclock pretty well I can run FSX 20-30fps on my current setup with the 9500GT but the PMDG brings down the frames to around 15 but with a better graphics card I should be able to see an improvement!I can upgrade my processor if needed at a later date.ThanksDan

Ya, best thing to do so you can future proof your system is get a good graphics card, and see how it goes! The 9500GT honestly is a low end card when it comes to gaming, and has a lot less power than the 9600GTX even (nVidia has a weird naming scheme). Then if it's still not what your looking for invest in the Phenom II X3 720 which can clock as high as 4GHz or go for the Phenom II X4, depending on your preference/money.

Sorry I'm not up to date with the names of the cards but is the 9600GTX the GTX260? I just was not sure. To be honest I really want to use FSX for now for GA I'm not interested in having AI traffic on it right now etc just some GA stuff etc I think I'll be ok until I can expand on the processor.ThanksDan

I believe the 260 is more inline with the 9800 series, but a bit better. With the old series, really the x800 and beyond are meant for gaming. anything under them are the budget cards.

No that was a typo on my part I meant to say the 9500GT is incredibly less powerful than the 9600GT*. The above poster is right the GTX260 is like the a re-branded 9800GTX but a little bit more powerful. The Core 216 GTX260 may be significantly faster than the 9800 series although.
