looking for GMAX tutorials for FSX

Featured Replies

i have found a few GMAX tutorials online, some are videos and some are just text. like anything else some are better then others but most seem to be be for FS2004. I am using FSX.i am trying to build my home airport terminal in GMAX. it is not a very big building and not to fancy, just a big brick box with a glass tower on top. I am looking for tutorials on how to make the textures for this, and how to make the shape in GMAX to place the textures on. i would appreciate any suggestions anyone has out there on a good place to learn the basics.thanks, Kyle

Hi Kyle,Looking at your questions what you need to pick up first is the basic use of the tools in gmax first. So take a look at the help files in gmax and get used to using the basic tool set and simply play around with creating simple poly models. Once you get used to creating and then editing your meshes then start to learn how to use the material editor and texture tools in gmax. The only way to learn the basics is to do it your self. When you have got the basics under your belt then you will be able to better understand how to use Microsoft's export tools and see your work in Flight Sim.Dan Martin Flight Ontario

I think some of the best stuff is on fsdeveloper.com. don't be put off by fs9 stuff. Most of it applies, other than new stuff in the fsx materials editor. Some of the older FS sdks are also good. One problem I have with many tutorials, is that I couldn't get over some of the conceptual hurdles and very quickly I was just pushing buttons as requested by the tutorial, with no idea why I wanted to or had to push them.scott s..

thanks for the information so far. i have been experimenting with designing the airport terminal building itself, trying to get the shape and size correct and have been getting closer about 60% there so far, still a lot to learn. my bigger challenge has been the textures, creating good ones, especially if the pictures are not the best to use, or not enough of them, or some other issue. for this airport it is very easy to photograph the terminal from all sides myself so that will be down the line. and i will not fear the FS9 tutorials as much :(

Somewhat repeating what has been said:For any sort of modelling (and especially gmax), learn the 'feel' of the program. the gmax tutorials are good for this. The FS9 SDK has some good scenery building tutorials. Don't be afraid to "push the buttons". In many cases, learning a new program is a leap of faith. Grokking takes time. The main thing to consider when creating an FS-X model is creating the FS-X materials. Don't get too fancy on your first compiles with textures. Make them just standard 8 bit (256 color) just to make sure they're showing up.Welcome to the madness. And yes, fsdeveloper.com is the place for the best scenery tutorials and links.Having said that, the sticky posts above are a good help, and asking questions (the more specific the better) will get you the attention of fine scenery gurus.
