Shawbury ILS aproach on rwy 18 not working

Featured Replies

I did an ILS flight to Shawbury. According to Jepperson and the FSX map rwy 18 has an ILS approach. However, FSX ATC would only give me a visual approach to rwy 18. Has anyone else run into this problem?

watcher,Are you sure you are not confusing 'IFR' (which is related to ATC) with 'ILS' (which is related to airport an/or your aircraft capabilities)? Terminology is important because it distinguishes between simular, but different, subjects (even if they look/sound simular) and therefore be confusing. No biggee. I did a lot of that when I first started. Then I got 'serious' and started reading everyting I could. Even went to (holy cow!) the 'LEARNING CENTER' (hehe).CBNapamule

I don't see any approaches to EGOS in FSX, thus as far as ATC is concerned it only will be a VFR airport. I can't find any chart, but you could create an ILS approach in ADEX.scott s..

Mine shows an ILS app to rwy 18 on 108.7 at EGOS. If your getting a visual approach the weather is probably a factor. You can change weather to poor visibility and whatnot. Then you should get an ILS approach from ATC.Or on a visual approach to 18 from atc you can still use your instruments to land on 18 if you choose to. Its done in the real world.

5-4-21. Visual Approacha. A visual approach is conducted on an IFR flight plan and authorizes a pilot to proceed visually and clear ofclouds to the airport. The pilot must have either the airport or the preceding identified aircraft in sight. Thisapproach must be authorized and controlled by the appropriate air traffic control facility. Reported weather at theairport must have a ceiling at or above 1,000 feet and visibility 3 miles or greater. ATC may authorize this typeapproach when it will be operationally beneficial. Visual approaches are an IFR procedure conducted under IFR invisual meteorological conditions. Cloud clearance requirements of 14 CFR Section 91.155 are not applicable, unlessrequired by operation specifications.b. Operating to an Airport Without Weather Reporting Service. ATC will advise the pilot when weather is notavailable at the destination airport. ATC may initiate a visual approach provided there is a reasonable assurance thatweather at the airport is a ceiling at or above 1,000 feet and visibility 3 miles or greater (e.g. area weather reports,PIREPs, etc.).c. Operating to an Airport With an Operating Control Tower. Aircraft may be authorized to conduct a visualapproach to one runway while other aircraft are conducting IFR or VFR approaches to another parallel, intersecting,or converging runway. When operating to airports with parallel runways separated by less than 2,500 feet, thesucceeding aircraft must report sighting the preceding aircraft unless standard separation is being provided by ATC.When operating to parallel runways separated by at least 2,500 feet but less than 4,300 feet, controllers willclear/vector aircraft to the final at an angle not greater than 30 degrees unless radar, vertical, or visual separation isprovided during the turn-on. The purpose of the 30 degree intercept angle is to reduce the potential for overshoots

Thanks guys for the replies. I'll fiddle with the weather and see if that makes any difference. The information from PPSFA in particular was quite interesting and gave me a much better insight into how ATC operates in various conditions.

Glad to help, Google and the AIM (Airmens Information Manual) are great assets :(

I suspect what you are seeing is the ILS facility data. All this does is cause the feather to draw on the map/GPS and cause the needles to move (and morse audio) in the user aircraft. ATC and AI know nothing of this data. They only respond to an ILS approach, which you can look for by using the "proc" button in the GPS. In fact, all AI knows about is in the approach header, giving the location and altitude of the final approach fix, and the course to get to it. Once crossing the final approach fix the AI will attempt to follow the extended runway centerline and descend to the threshold.scott s..
