Better Performance with DXT

Featured Replies

Ok guys,A bit of information i am passing on to you from another source.I was researching better FPS and came across a thread which mentioned something about changing you're textures to DXT3,you can change things like complex scenery textures, aircraft and terrain textures to DXT3 without loosing to much image qualitybut it improved my FPS by about 50.Other than converting them 1 by 1 you can use a widely available batch process which can be downloaded here: http://jarredspiller.co.uk/fs9/20091206_10...URE_CONVERT.zipPut these files into another folder along with all the images you wish to convert and run the convert.batI changed all the images in my FS9/Texture folder (apart from clouds, sky, water etc.), my UT image files and all my add-on scenery textures.I get around 120FPS on the ground at EGLL where as i used to get around 60FPS :) :) :)Hope you find it useful - PLEASE BACKUP ANYTHING YOU CONVERT !Jarred Spiller

Hmmm, anyone else able to confirm this as a smart step to take?

I've tested it with the Scenery folder in FS9:1.- Folder size reduced from 127 Mb to 80...humm that's good. :( 2.- Frame rates have not improved...humm that's not good. :( 3.- Textures with strange colours and shapes...humm that's very bad. :( Of course I made a backup before the test B)

Oh, sorry, I mean the TEXTURE folder.

In FSX, the images are already DXT. They are saved in as .DDS, but in DXT format. What you are probably doing with this batch conversion is removing all the alpha channels which control transparency.Have fun.I wouldn't recommend it....In FS9, the same thing....

I'm sad to hear that there are issues, maybe works with diffrent set-ups as mine works fine.Just one thing i forgot to mention i filtered out all the images with Alpha-Channels not to kill transparancy.Cheers

I'm hoping you backed you're filles up as i said.I'm learning myself and this is NOT my work, it's from another source. If you know what your doing and what not to convert you have more of a chance. As i said, i'm just passing this info onto you from elsewhere.Better to share for the few who know what they are doing than not to at all !Jarred Spiller

Vin is correct (as you would expect - and that's a compliment!) there are posts on this topic going on 4+ years, and they all seem to indicate "Don't do it." See: http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=208136 as an example. What may (may) have gotten someone a few FPS - and at a distinct loss in quality and possible introduction of artifacts - 'back in the day', is doubly not needed on anything even close to modern hardware, IMHO.Cheers!
