Using Sketchup instead of GMAX or FSDS

Featured Replies

Hi all,I don't know if this is old news to you all, but you can now use Sketchup (much easier to use than GMAX or FSDS) to create buildings for FS9 and FSX. You use Arno's ModelConverterX to convert from Sketchup to MDL format.I've created a tutorial here:http://www.calclassic.com/sketchup_tutorial.htmTwo classic airports have already been released at flightsim.com using it (Baltimore Friendship 1957 and Kansas City 1958).Hope this helps,

Thanks a lot for the heads-up, Tom. And good job on the tutorial.Best regards.Luis

Something else to play with is Building Maker which builds on the capability in SU to compute geometry from an image by using multiple images to better refine the geometry. Main problem is it only works in select cities where Google has uploaded imagery and appears to emphasize city centers. Also it's online only, and as near as I can tell you can only download your own models into SU, they don't seem to be part of 3d warehouse.(On that subject I can't get a clear reading of the rights to use models from the 3d warehouse. The EULA seems to say as long as you leave a model in 3d Warehouse Google has a right to use in any manner they want, but didn't see anything about third parties.) scott s..
