What's the proper way to update video driver

Featured Replies

I have an ATI 5870 running Windows 7 64 bitWhat is the proper way to update the driver?

You should find an installer/uninstaller in your ATI folder (which will be on your main hard drive), although using Control Panel software remove option might get that to kick in too. Uninstall the current driver and then restart your PC, whereupon it will be obvious if the driver has gone since your system will detect your graphics card as a 'new' device and your screen resolution will probably have reverted to a fairly low setting. Next, install your new driver, which may also require a restart to get it to kick in (and probably will). Theoretically you can just install the new driver, but removing the old one first invariably works out better where ATI is concerned. You may also need to upgrade Catalyst too.Al

Should I set a system restore point prior to doing this?

No. If the new drivers don't work out for you, you can go into the device manager and restore the previous drivers.Best regards,Jim

Make sure you use something like driver sweeper after uninstalling. It removes all the left overs from the old drivers, simply uninstalling does not do it.

I use this:http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745EDIT: Sorry I did not realize that the software is not available any more on Guru3D. It is share ware from the link below. I have downloaded it for free other places. A search may yield better results. http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D---Drive...tup)_d1655.html
