Using TripleHead2Go...Just switched from CRTs to LCDs and have problem

Featured Replies

I'm a long time user of TripleHead2Go...(had been using 3 - 21" CRT monitors (4:3 ratio screens) with 3840x1024 pixel resolution across the extended desktop view). The native resolution for each of these monitors was 1280x1024. The external views rendered the aircraft/scenery properly proportioned and the cockpit views (virtual panel and 2D panels) had the round gauges appearing round..I just replaced those CRTs with 3-21.5" LCDs (16:9 ratio) with native resolution for each of 1920x1080 pixels. I kept the 3840x1024 resolution setting. Now....all views (external and internal appear distorted/stretched out.....planes look elongated and gauges are stretched horizontally and look ovoid, not round.I've been adjusting the Windows Display Properties (changing the various resolutions for the extended desktop) and can't get these planes/panels to look normal! Resolutions available in the Win Display settings are:3840x10243840x7683840x7203360x10503072x76822560x10242400x6002048x15361920x14401600x10241600x9001360x7681280x10241280x9601280x7201152x8641088x6121024x768960x600800x600**There are many of you that use TripleHead2Go and are running 3 LCDs (16.9 ratio screens). QUESTION: How did you adjust things to get the planes and the panels to look proper (i.e. not stretched ...gauges appearing round)? Or....is this not possible?I'd really appreciate your help with this. Thanks,Mike

Go 4080 x 768 (or 5040 x 1050 if you got Win 7 or Vista with DX10 or higher). I assume you got the TH2G digital edition! You got to activate settings in Matrox setup. And you may want to refrain from using SGU to edit your FSX.cfg or what ever game cfg, though it worked before in XP, in W7 it leaves you with a frame rate of 2-5, just set WideViewAspect=True in cfg, and you

No Bjorn......I have the TH2Go analog version (I bought it several years ago when they first came out). I'm running Win XP SP3 and only using FS2004. I can't find any resolution higher than 3840x1024 shown.Mike
Mike:I don't think you're going to have much success. I use the older TH2G analog version with three LCDs with the same resolution as you. The center screen is a 24" widescreen and is very slightly distorted but well balanced with slightly smaller right and left LCDs of the "traditional" display format. I recently thought about getting three widescreen LCDs but decided not to do so because I had not seen a method to correct distortion. You may have to change to the digital TH2G although I'd ask around more first of all to be sure you avoid further disappointment.JS

Mike- For 2D panels, you can solve that wide monitor ovalization/distortion problem by using two video cards to drive triple monitors, rather than TH2GO. This allows the main panel (and popup sub panels) to be reproportioned so gauges stay perfectly round on wide format monitors - same as they are on 4:3 monitors. And there's a couple of bonuses- you get a full, triple views scene rather than the laterally stretched single view of TH2GO. Hi JS,Since posting my initial question (and getting few replies) I was in contact with a tech at Matrox. Essentially, even if I were using the TH2GO digital edition there is no additional resolution available that would solve this "ovalization" issue. He went on to say that there are no video cards available (as of yet) that will allow this high of a resolution 3x1920x1080 ......Mike

OK, so there we go. Shame!JS

Hi Alex,Before I got the TH2GO unit several years ago (about 1 month after it was released) I was doing exactly what you described.....using two video cards to drive 3 monitors. If I remember correctly the problem that I had with that was horrible FPS.....So....once I got the TH2GO.....and hooked it up to my 4:3 ratio monitors I was SOOOO happy to see the results (and able to get satisfactory FPS). Until I recently bought the 3 new monitors I had only been using planes that offered good virtual panels....and they appeared without distortion. Once I hooked them up and saw the "ovalization" issue I REDISCOVERED the 2D Panels and here is what I'm doing now. In front of and below the 3 wideview monitors I positioned a 22" monitor (running at its native 1920x1080 off of the second head of the video card). On it I have placed the 2D panels (main and subpanels) of my planes, the GPS, ATC window and electronic kneeboard. Then I use the 3 (above it..."view") panels to display the outside view only and/or the virtual panel w/outside view. With two yoke buttons I can toggle between those views. I've been doing a lot of experimenting lately flying various planes this way and it hasn't been bad. One thing that I DO like about thwe 2D panels is the sharpness and easy readability of the gauges/annunciator lights, etc. Fortunately, doing this has also NOT resulted in any FPS hits. While not totally thrilled about the "ovalization" when I am using the virtual panels, I'm starting to get used to it. What is totally thrilling is the amazing color and sharpness of the new monitors as compared to what I had before (the 4 CRTs).Thanks for your input.Mike
Mike- Great, an even better solution to ovalization!Re frame rate with triple mons on 2 cards: Yes, my displayed Frame Rate drops about 50% with 3 mons running off 2 GPUs. HOWEVER-I can detect no difference in smoothness - 15 fps on triple mons is as smooth as 30 fps on a single monitor- IF THE 3 VIEWS ARE ACCURATELY ADJUSTED FOR BEZEL SEPARATION! (In effect 3 become a single as far as your eyes and brain can tell.)Reason is that with only a single CPU, only one monitor frame can be updated at a time- the other two are frozen during update of the third- they have an infinitely HIGH FPS !!!So 2/3 of the whole is always SMMOOOTHH regardless of the red FPS numbers. One's eyes and brain seem to average out the whole thing nicely.I've tested this many times- go flying with 3 monitors/views and note average frame rate. Then suddenly kill the outer views and FPS doubles but there is no change in fluidity.I setup FS for each plane to get 30-50 FPS on a single mon- then with 3 mons, I get 15-30. One of the quirks in this is that the plane is quite flyable right down to about 7-8 FPS ! (Again, double that 7-8 with a single mon, and you are back to the normal 14-16 considered minimum for single mon fluidity.)So even with a 6 yr old 'puter I'm pretty satisfied.Anyway you approach it, 3 views are vastly better than one! Thanks for your reply.Alex Reid
