Carenado Arrow Trim help

Featured Replies

I've an issue with the Arrow since it came out. I don't know if it's a joystick setting or what but I prior to takeoff I have to trim up a whole heck of a lot to even get off the runway. And once I rotate the nose jumps off and I'm at a high AoA which is bad. Is this a T-tail tendency or what? And then once I'm level I re-trim for cruise but the same goes for landing - I need to put in a ton more trim to get it right for landing....Any suggestions?

This sounds like an issue I had with the Lionheart Epic LT Dynasty. The "fix" for me was to leave the Autopilot "totally" off until well established on the climbout; bummer as one likes to have Altitude/VS & Heading dialed in before takeoff. Merely turning it on would apparently cause the autopilot to start trimming away.
Is this a T-tail tendency
No (not in my experience anyway). This T-Tail wiki provides a very nice/short description of the pros & cons of the T-tail design.

ryan:I had the same concern when I first purchased the Arrow. I had always heard that the T tail elevator tends to have less authority because it is outside the prop wash, so I figured it needs a good deal of elevator to get off the ground. In any event, I believe you need to apply elevator trim to the first mark on the trim wheel (which is a lot of trim) prior to takeoff (+1 notch of flaps). When you hit 85 kts on the takeoff roll, start to ease back on the stick. Yes, the plane tends to leap off the ground a bit if you pull back too much. I try to be gentle with the stick after the initial ease back and then let it "sit" on the trimmed elevator during climb, which avoids too much AoA. I don't need to trim too much on landing once I get within flap speed.Major V

The Avsim review also noted this behavior. Would be interesting to hear from someone who's flown a real T-tail whether it's realistic or not.

Again, from what Ryan is experiencing: no... not in my experience. I did my Commercial ME rating, MEI & MEII, and all ME instruction I gave... in the Piper Seminole. However, all of my Arrow flying was in the Arrow III (straight tail).Sorry, I don't own the Carenado Arrow IV. Maybe one day... if they bundle it... say a "Piper Package" with the Archer, Saratoga & Seneca! :( If you have the Aircraft configured & trimmed correctly, and use the recommended Take-Off and Departure Speeds... imo, for Arrival & Departure the T-Tail is a bit better as it is up and out of the way of the wing's downwash & the propwash. On landing, if you're a throttle jockey, you don't have to be concerned with varying strengths of airflow from propwash over the Stab. It becomes a pilot preference sort of thing. Maybe you're a bush pilot and/or fly out of a very short strip. You may need that propwash to aid in Short/Soft Field Take-Offs & Landings. As I said, there are pros & cons for each. What happens in FSX is another story.Normal Take-Off Procedure (no obstacle) for the Arrow IV does not involve the use of Flaps. Trim is set slightly aft of neutral. Plane accelerates to 65 to 75 KIAS (depending on weight) and rotate to climb attitude. Gear-up when a landing on the runway w/Gear Down no longer possible. Accelerate to and Climb out at Best-Rate (Vy) of 90 KIAS.Maybe it is something with the "flight model" Ryan, because it certainly doesn't sound "normal. :(
