30 Inch Dell for FSX

Featured Replies

hi allis anyone using a 30 inch monitor for FS? I see the specs as 2560 x 1600 which is what i like in comparison to my current setup TH2Go 3840 x 1024, while i like the horizontal viewing with the TH2GO i do not like the vertical viewing, especially when i am flying the PMDG 747, so the "1600" part is what i am after giving me more 'viewing area',anyone else have a 30 inch?

Clayton- not entirely sure I understand your query. But in Flight Sim, each view is fixed in terms in terms of its angular width and height. The exception is zooming- "In" reduces the angular content, "Out" increases it. Higher resolution will not change the content- but will make it visually sharper because of the increased number of pixels. And as the number of pixels increases, so also does the computational load on the CPU. More pixels= lower frame rate. You do the math! In TH2Go, you are seeing a single FS View stretched across the 3 monitors. It may be zoomed or panned but it is still a single FS view. To make the standard FS View fit the TH triple wide format, the top/bottom is sheared off. To regain this lost scenery, I believe many users apply zoom out- which also increases the amount of lateral scenery- @ .31 zoom, Field of view is about 102

ok Alexthanks for your detailed explanation, perhaps its best for me to stick with my current setup, i do enjoy using TH2GO over the number of years, with 3D drivers and 3D glasses, FSX really looks amazing especially on the approaches!so you say you use 3 monitors and 2 video cards which i also have the forth monitor for things like FMC and 3d MAP, but what do you use to view outside then ?

Clayton- Picture is worth a thousand words!Alex ReidExtreme King Air turning final R09 CYYJ (Airport is upper right corner - left monitor.) Without the extra view (left fwd), how do you make a smooth approach?

Eyefinity with 2 monitors is neat. Just zoom out and move the chair back with control enter. Couple that with TrackIR and its pretty sweet. Drags my frames down too low, though, so I've moved back to a single monitor for VC and two more for instrument panels. The problem with the dragging the views over like explained above, is that is can be difficult to line up (as you can see with the left and middle screens above), and it puts a huge strain on the CPU and GPU. It's like trying to run multiple instances of FSX all at once.

thanks, i also prefer flying in VC mode 100% with the complex PMDG 747 ac.

Hyperion- Lining up multiple monitor views is actually very simple. In the pic above, the left monitor view was deliberately shortened to make room for the switch panel. I could just as easily make it full screen- like this one below, (It has a 4th view - "Look Up" opened and ready to drag upward & resize onto another monitor ABOVE main view. This is a shot using the Extra 300 for aerobatics- that 4th view "Up" would be handy!) Regarding performance, yes FPS drops but the smoothness does not. Reason is that with just a single CPU, only one view can be updated at a time- the other views are static. If the views are precisely adjusted for bezels, you see just a single very wide view of which 2/3 is always frozen and so has an "infinitely high" frame rate. As long as the posted frame rate (for the view being updated at that instant) remains above 15, your brain sees the whole as very smooth! My 'puter is an ancient AMD 1.8 Ghz and runs triple view FS9 addons, such as PMDG 747, quite nicely- with some FS settings reduced a bit from max. Here is an experimental pic showing FIVE views open- The discontinuities are due to displaying these five on only three monitors. Those outer wing views should actually be on monitors 4 & 5, if I had them, which would be BESIDE me in an arc. And each view would then occupy a full screen. Note the alignment of the Freeway in the left monitor. Alas, with these 5 views, frame rate was dipping below the magic 15.Yes- five views is a bit much for this old machine- but Hey, it does work. Imagine what a faster processor could do!Alex Reid

FS9 doesn't really stand a chance to take down any of the middle end machines on the market today, even with multiple monitors. In my case, I was talking about FSX, which is what the OP was asking about. I dunno. I'm a freak about having to lower any of my settings, so that probably disables me from using a 4+ monitor set, but a big high rez monitor + trackir5 really solves that problem for me.

Hyperion- not my intent to claim one method superior- TrackIr does a good job too. You fly Virtual panels I presume? Multiple views/monitors works similarly with FSX, and like FS9, doesn't need ultra high powered computers. I collaborated on an FSX triple monitor setup some 15 months ago- worked quite well. That 'puter was nowhere near the power of more recent machines. Finally, triple monitors is a very practical display configuration- more than three is a bit of overkill unless there is a specific need. The pics were really just to demonstrate capability and to illustrate the very modest effect on performance- ie frame rate really doesn't mean much!! Smoothness is what we seek.Alex Reid

Clayton- Beautiful pic! Thanks for posting. TH2Go I believe?Whether with TH2Go, Dual GPUs or Eyefinity, once you've flown with multi monitors, there's no turning back!Alex Reid

hi yes this is TH2GO, yes no turning back also definitely no turning back once you try 3D on FSX!
