.CFG file being written to automatically! ?

Featured Replies

Hi all,Ok, perhaps someone can shed some light on how to block this little annoyance.I'm making some tweaks to a particular aircraft ... I save the tweaks.Choose another aircraft, then revert back to the tweaked plane.. & certain entries that i CHANGED, or DELETED are back again!!! - i.e. seemingly pulled in from their equiv values within the .AIR file!???What a pain .... even if you make the .CFG file 'Read Only' before doing the plane switch to apply the changes, the CFG file STILL gets written into despite the read only being in place.. ##### is going on & how the heck can you stop / block it...Example cut n paste below:PRIOR to EDIT:reference_datum_position = 0.000, 0.000, 0.000empty_weight_CG_position = 0.000, 0.000, 0.000CG_forward_limit = 0.000CG_aft_limit = 1.000//empty_weight_roll_MOI=28000.000000//empty_weight_pitch_MOI=34000.000000//empty_weight_yaw_MOI=24000.000000//empty_weight_coupled_MOI=1300.000000I'VE manually 'rem'ed out the MOI values & added my own further down the cfg file:I then SAVE the file, even make it read only .. then do the plane swap in the sim ...I then go back into the .CFG file and see this!reference_datum_position = 0.000, 0.000, 0.000empty_weight_CG_position = 0.000, 0.000, 0.000CG_forward_limit = 0.000CG_aft_limit = 1.000//empty_weight_roll_MOI=28000.000000//empty_weight_pitch_MOI=34000.000000//empty_weight_yaw_MOI=24000.000000//empty_weight_coupled_MOI=1300.000000empty_weight_roll_MOI=28000.000000empty_weight_pitch_MOI=34000.000000empty_weight_yaw_MOI=24000.000000empty_weight_coupled_MOI=1300.000000The Bloody lines have been written back in again!!! :-/How do you stop this annoying thing happenning? Afterall it does NOT do it with all aircraft... is there some Param within the .AIR file that instructs it to ENFORCE itself over the corresponding .CFG file?Hope someone knows what causes this & knows how to knock it on the head. Many thanks

Name one of the aircraft, which will enable somebody else to test if it's a general problem or a specific problem with your setup.

I think he might have meant that perhaps if you enter your specs that might shed some light on problem. Are you using Vista or Win's 7? If yes, then search for several dozens of topics on this scenario (ie: unable to save cfg in (Vista/Win's7).And if you make cfg changes you only have to re-load the same aircraft for them to take effect. If you make changes to the air file THEN you HAVE to load a default a/c (any) and then reload your a/c for the air changes to take effect. The air file will write a section in (sometimes with all zeros, which don't help) if the entire section is missing in cfg. Try it. And if you leave out the left bracket then the air file won't be able to read that section so it writes it, so be careful with copy/paste not to leave the '[' out. I do it (drats). This (air write) is just a left over from FS2000 / 2002. Hang in there.CBNapamule

Hi,I'm running on windows XP .. successfully for years now. I don't think it is my PC setup as in every other way, including editing other .cfg files perfectly, FSX runs just fine. The aircraft in question is the Folland Gnat by Brian Franklin. The cfg file DOES save ok, as other parameters that i've tweaked ARE there just fine. The problem is that certain items seem to be re-written back in by the sim when the aircraft is re-loaded, even if they are deleted. (They don't overwrite anything that i have added / changed, just get added back in, thus doubling up some of the variables.Hope you can help :-)

I'd recommend you to get in touch with Brian Franklin - he might have some good advice on this issue and also on the static objects that show up when you turn of the engines.Edited: If this is a freeware aricraft, remember to show your apreciation for his work :( All freeware developers need all the positive feedback they can get. And I guess this goes for payware developers as well

"If this is a freeware aricraft, remember to show your apreciation for his work" :( All freeware developers need all the positive feedback they can get". Absolutely! I couln't agree more. in fact i think i used the word 'superb' in my other post, to describe his fantastic aircraft! Many thanksAl

It reads like you are saying that you have FSX running, modify a cfg file and save it, fly awhile, choose another plane, go back to the first plane and the changes that you made to the cfg file are gone. If that is the case then FSX is probably over writing it because you went to another plane and back to the first plane. The next you change a cfg file trying shutting FSX off and restarting before you choose another plane. I read someplace that this can happend when you modify a fsx.cfg file and maybe this is also happening your aircraft.cfg file.Rod

When FS loads an aircraft, if it finds that certain entries in the aircraft.cfg file are missing it will add them. If you moved the MOI entries out of the [weight_and_ballance] section thats the same as deleting them altogether as thats the only place FS will look for them. You can move them any where you like within the [weight_and_ballance] section.FYI. You don't have to load another aircraft after editing an aircraft.cfg file. You can assign a key combination to the "reload aircraft" event such as "Ctl+Shft+R".Good luck mate! :( Ron

I'VE manually 'rem'ed out the MOI values & added my own further down the cfg file:
There's ya problem! (maybe)Values in the aircraft.cfg file will take precedence over the .air file but they do need to be in the right section. ie [weight_and_balance]. If you have added your MOI values outside this section then FSX is obviously writing in the values from the .air file.

Bingo!!!Thank you Gentlemen! - It was indeed to do with the fact that certain parameters being added by myself, were not contained under the correct section heading. As soon as i moved my custom ones into the right place. the .CFG started to bahave itself! - My Bad!Once again thank you for all your help.Al:-)
