SSD w/ FSX - Talk to me!

Featured Replies

Someone convince me the SSD is just too much. :( Im building a new i7 930 6/8GB 5870 ATI system. I cant go more than an 80-120GB SSD drive with my budget. But I wouldnt mind knowing what some people are feeling when their FSX with SSD drives are running together. I know some time in the past there was some stuttering due to the read access of the HD. I ran raptors before.I don't mind running other games or programs off a 1TB SATA drive. I can live with a little bit longer load. But, the FSX system is a hog and if you folks think that SSD will make a wow difference I may just jump for it. I would put the OS on the SSD, and HD hungry FSX and other programs on the SSD.

GlssimpilotI use a 120GB SSD on a rig built only for FSX. FSX is the only software on the SSD. (Ensure the SSD supports "TRIM" or a proprietary background garbage cleaner)I have the OS and limited software on a 2TB SATAII HDD (<2% full). OS Win 7 64-bit.I would not put the OS & FSX together on the same drive -too many problems with permissions, security etc. It is much better to have FSX on a separate dedicated fast drive that can load textures as fast as they are needed. I also put the paging file on the SSD and that has had some impact. On my SSD FSX loads very quickly and I do not see any "turn stutters" but there has been no increase in fps but it is very smooth.Do not defrag the SSD (use TRIM or equivalent) and the NTFS 4Kb default format cluster size runs FSX (which has many small files) very well. Results may vary on your system. :( RegardsPeterH

An 80-120GB SSD is pretty small for both the OS and FSX.I run three Intel 160GB X-25M SSDs in my system. I like them a lot...they speed up loading times tremendously, and I never see blurries or significant stuttering with them. But you can get by without them just fine...a 10K Velociraptor is a good solution too, but it'll take longer for program loading.I've written quite a bit more on my experiences here in AVSIM...recommend you do a search and read what others and I have already said.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO
