Were is the Scenery.cfg file?

Featured Replies

I own FSX Deluxe but cannot install it just yet because I don't have a box that's free. So I've been writing some utilities for FS9 and would like to include support for FSX as well. What I'd like to know is where FSX installs the Scenery.cfg file. I've heard rumors that it is in 2 places. One copy is in the FSX root folder and another copy is in your user folder.Another thing that would be useful to find out is if this location is stored in the registry. The FS9 path is stored in the following registry key and I was wondering if there is something similar for FSX. So please chime in if you've know the answer for these questions and it will be greatly appreciated!MarkDefault Registry Key for FS9HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator\9.0\EXE Path(This would be the default location in FS9 for the Scenery.cfg file)

Where it is depends on which OS you are running, for Win7 on my rig the one that FSX actually uses is at:C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX\scenery.cfgI doubt that it would make a difference, but I have FSX installed on D:

Is that where the FSX executable is also? My program will already renumber the scenery.cfg file for FSX but I'd like to find out where the file is located by knowing where it is supposed to be. There probably is a registry key that tells FSX where to look for the file. For FS9, I simply grab that "EXE Path" key and I know that the scenery.cfg file is supposed to be in that folder. But it appears that there are different places for the file dependent on which OS you're running. There still has to be a limited amount of variations...maybe 2 or 3 places at the most. So I have one now...and would like to have more!Win7 = C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX\scenery.cfgThere probably are more locations and a registry key also.Mark

One of the things I most dislike about Vista and Win7 is that they've forced FS to scatter files all over hells-half-acre...Your active scenery.cfg file may be found here:C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\scenery.cfgThe copy of scenery.cfg in the root ..\FSX folder is only the template used to create the active version... :(

Thanks Bill! I heard that's where another copy of it was but wanted to confirm it. Do you happen to know if there is a registry key which FSX gets info from...like the path to the FSX executable? I've read through the entire SDK and couldn't find any reference to it, and, really didn't expect to. It's obscure info that in most cases wouldn't need to be published.Mark

There is a registry key to FSX but I don't know that FSX actually uses it in the typical day to day running of FSX as it is quite possible to stuff up your registry key and still have FSX working perfectly well. The only time you would know you had a stuffed up registry key is when you tried to install an addon and it tries to find the location of FSX by reading the registry key. There is a FSX and FS9 registry key fixer available from flight1 (in the free files section of the flight1 site) that will fix up your registry if it becomes corrupted. Here is the location of the registry key:Root Key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or CURRENT USERKey:SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\flight simulator\10.0\Subkey:Setup Path
