Sids and Stars

I asked on the captain sim forum, and my post got relegated to another thread, and thus, never answered. So I am asking here. How do you know which ones to use when you're programming a landing or takeoff?

I guess you simply use the ones that belong to the runway in use and which has a good connection to your actual flightplan. You'll need charts in order to see which options you have (or at least more information than a list of SIDS and STARS in an FMC gives you). And btw afaik in real life SIDS and STARS are assigned to you when you need them, although that depends on where you are flying (if I am not mistaken).

1) Ask VATSIM ATC2) Download the charts and see which one is appropriate for your runway/route. 3) Alternatively your FMC will tell you which SID/STAR will go with which runway, but it wont be specific on which one is best for your route.

May I also offer a suggestion and direct you to http://www.fltplan.com/ where you can click on the Flight Plan menu then enter the departure/arrival airports and it will provide you with real life flight plans that you can use to prepare a FSX Flight Plan. It also provides every possible SID for the departure airport and every possible STAR for the arrival airport and provides even more info than what I can place here. Hope this helps!Best regards,Jim
