VNAV problems

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,I've been flying the PMDG 747 for 6 months now without any problems. I've just noticed that the last three flights that I had: The plane cannot maintain cruise altitude and continues to climb beyond the altitude setting in the FMC and MCP. Situation cannot be resolved using FLCH or V/S mode. To return to the correct altitude, I have to disengage the AP and fly manually. There was no turbulence, and system failures programmed in these flights. What do I have to do to solve the problem?I'm using FSX on Windows 7 (64 bit).

A screen shot might help. This issue gets asked about once a month and we never find out what the problem was. The complaints just go away suddenly.

i have the exact same problem as you my friend, i was talking to a guy with lufthansa virtual last night he suggested runing fsx in full screen and to my joy it worked although its not practical at all, so i ust decided to leave it windowed and carry on with other things, this also seems to help the sim, its weird and very temperamental, but to all out there if anyone knows a dead cert fix to this problem please share it with us now lol

As mysterious as the problem started, I was surprised as I'm now able to maintain a cruise and level flight. Prior to this flight I have done three things:1. Installed a REGISTERED and latest version of FSUIPC4.2. Re-calibrated my joystick.3. Run the whole flight in full screen.A new problem:I have noticed that I'm unable to make the autothrottle work. Even with the AT switch engaged, the "AT arm" indicator is absent in the PFD. I still have manual control of the throttles through my joystick. Anybody have ideas to solve this?

Did TOGA work on takeoff? Did you select a departure runway and complete preflight. Make sure there are no discontinuites in the flight plan? Make sure your throttle cannot trip A/T through movement or noise spikes? She looks like she is holding altitude real nice.

I've had the 747X for a couple of weeks and have completed (well sort of) 2 flights now. The esc key is handy!I'm having the same VNAV problems, last night on a long flight I paused it for an hour or so while attending to other things and I came back to it unpaused and everything seemed ok except it was wildly porpoising ~+/- 1500ft. Then again today I had FL320 programmed into the FMC which it reached quite nicely then after an hour or so the porpoising was back.I haven't tried the fullscreen mode yet, I will try that next time.Where is that darn TOGA switch? I have searched 2D and VC cockpits and spent 2 weeks reading the manuals before making a flight and I can see nothing to show where that switch is.With all the documentation that is supplied I'm amazed that there is no complete cockpit diagram showing switch placements.P.K

There are TO/GA switches located on the thrust levers, and also a clickspot on the screw to the left of the A/T ARM switch (the very top left screw on the MCP).

Welcome to the wonderful world of advanced pdf searches. All of your 747 manuals live in 1 folder. For fs9 there are 14 of them and the folder is (fs9)\PMDG\747400\Operating ManualOpen any pdf file, it doesn't matter what it is, and click the drop-down arrow on the right end of the search box (where it says 'Find'), and open the full reader search. The keyboard shortcut is shift-control-F.Choose "all pdf documents in" then choose 'browse for location' in the dropdown, and navigate to your pmdg manuals folder. Then type 'to/ga' in the 'what to search for' box and set it alight - you'll be given a list of every occurence of 'to/ga' in every pdf in that folder and when you click on each listing you'll be taken to it in the correct document. Note that it's 'to/ga' - just searching for 'toga' won't get you anywhere (but you probably know that already). The listing in the autopilot file that says "The TO/GA clickspot is located on ..." is probably a good one to start with :( Hope that helpsGary

The last flight (LOWW-EHAM) was great. The plane was properly prepared (FMC, MCP) and configured for takeoff. For this flight I used the TOGA button to exert takeoff thrust (5% derated). Here you can see the climb to FL100:The cockpit displays during cruise... Thanks guys for all the ideas. Problem solved!

Thanks, my knowledge of searching started and ended with Alta Vista. :( The TO/GA problem can be considered fixed thanks to the help here. Unfortunately the VNAV woes haven't.Last night I flew (attempted) a quick trip from YPPH to YMML and roughly 2hrs into the flight things started going haywire. I'm using REX2 for weather and for most of the time at cruise (FL390) I had winds on my starboard side, ~180

The MSFS weather engine is to blame, the best solution but not perfect is to allow FSUIPC to smooth the variations, which requires the registered version but worth every penny.

Thanks, I've read that several times on forums now so I will do that. What gets me though is that my Captain Sim 767 hit's those same fluctuations and it rocks around as you would expect but it never comes close to "losing it" like this 747 does.I'm also using REX2 for weather not the MS version. Does REX gather it's information from MS?

I use ActiveSky and it gives the same wind shifts. Registered FSUIPC is the way to go, limit wind shifts by the plane to 2-3 degrees per second and it will take at least 30 seconds for a 90 degree swing, that's plenty of time for george to keep a grip on things.Gary
