Navigating a 747

Featured Replies

Hello all,I have a few questions about navigating the PMDG 747.When you type in your way-points into the RTE section of the FMC, your route appears on the ND, and I can click on LNAV and VNAV and it will fly me all the way to my destination. However, do pilots in real life do this or do they follow vectors continuously specified by ATC and only use the RTE section of the FMC for display purposes (aside from SIDs and STARs)? Or do they fly LNAV and VNAV until there is a call from ATC to divert from it? How exactly does it work in real life? How about VATSIM?Also, how do I connect my SID or STAR to my way-points in the RTE section so that it is a continuous path? Whenever I select a SID, there is a discontinuity between the end of the SID and the first way-point.Thanks,

Real world and Vatsim you use LNAV & VNAV however ATC may vector you for traffic, weather avoidance etc so switch to HDG SEL follow instructions then back to LNAV when cleared to resume own navigation. You may also get shortcuts so you can perform a direct-to whatever waypoint they clear you to.Regarding the discontinuity, just delete it once your happy that you have selected the correct SID/STAR Regards

In real life, you file your flight plan, then prior to takofff, you contact 'clearance delivery' and see what they actually give you. Unless there is a reason not to, they normally give you what you filed, along with the SID and departure freq. Airlines have 'canned' clearances, which means they stay on file with ATC and they can pull them up. ATC will give you either instructions or vectors to get you on course, you then follow the plan as filed. If you need to waver from it in flight, for weather etc, you let ATC know and they will authorize it if it doesnt create a conflict with other aircraft. For Vatsim, I couldnt tell you what they do, I dont use it, but to clear a discontinuity, cleck the button next to the following waypoint to put it in the scratchpad, then click the button next to the waypoint above the disc, then ENTER.

Thanks Rob,So the FSX ATC is very inaccurate when it comes to the 747 because they continuously provide vectors to your destination, which is totally not how its done in real life. Also, I did not quite understand "Regarding the discontinuity, just delete it once your happy that you have selected the correct SID/STAR "Thanks

You really need to follow the tutorial flight, print out the instructions and learn how to program the fmc properly. Then in the future you can take a real flight plan, plug it into the fmc, load it into fsx, and the atc will know where you are going. Also most big airports have the correct approaches, so after filing that flight plan, you can select the approach star you want
