SID/STAR tutorial

Featured Replies

Does anyone know where I could find a tutorial on SID/STAR in relation to FSX? I'm looking for something simple to get me started. Thanks!

Firehawk or others, thanks for a link to the tutorial, real helpful. I seem to have a good understanding of SID, the one uncertainty is when to program the STAR and guessing which runway you will be assigned. Guess you can check on the weather status at your arrival airport when you're about 200 miles out to determine which runway you will be assigned, and then input your STAR. Or is it best to get the ATC runway assignment before programing the STAR.Tony

I don't think it matters when you'll program STAR as the ATC can give you vectors to different runway in case of wind shifts and all. I believe if you're using ATC add-on like RC, you need to program the STAR during flight plan creation.

Speaking of SIDS/STARS, don't you just love the sense of humor the FFA has (or whoever set-up the intersections, etc)? Some can be very funny. Like on the Luxor2 STAR for Las Vegas (McCarran) if coming over the PAGE VOR: PGA BETHL HOLDM KSINO LUXOR BAMAAkinda cuteOr the Bear4 STAR for Salt Lake City from the northwest: BURLY EFFTA NORDD BLIDA (bleeda) BEARR DYANN (dyin')I know there's some good ones out there but I can't think of 'em.

I have to just check in here on this.I've been flying Ga for 22 years now-the last 15 or so exclusively ifr.Now my experience is ga only and in the US only-disclaimer for my realm of flight...but!I've only had a handful of sids/stars.-ever!Of that handful I've only flown a sid completely once and a star never-they always vector you before you mostly get to the first waypoint. The sids/stars are all about if radar ever goes out which it seldom does.I did recently have an interesting new learning experience. I have flown to kagc a couple times recently. They have a sid which basically says radar vectors to the nearest waypoint. What was interesting about this is almost always anywhere else in your initial clearance you are given a departure freq to contact. At kagc they give you none. The first time we took off there they stated "contact departure" -the pilot that was flying (I was sic) said you didn't give us departure freq -atc said you dummy it is on the sid plate.Sure enough is was but it was not on any of the other airport plates like it usually would be.First time I at least have experienced that..I flew the same flight a week ago as pic-I stayed mum/dumb and asked the sic if he knew the departure freq. He looked on the approach plate-didn't see one. I asked him if we had got one in the clearance-he was puzzled just as I was the first time. I told him look at the sid! Only time I have every seen this.In any case in some long years of flying-a new situation. Flying is always a learning situtation. As for the sid/star mania I don't get it at least in my realm of flight other than academic mind games. If radar is available (at least in the us) you are going to get radar vectors. Thank god-it gets you there a lot faster!

A couple of months ago I was flying in Florida on VATSIM. There were a hole bunch of planes going into KTPA on the FOOXX2 arrival, and one of the waypoints on that STAR is HEVVN. Most of the pilots got really confused when the controller instructed them to "Go direct to HEVVN" :D

The RNAV rwy 16 approach at KPSM, arriving from the south/west: ITAWT ITAWA PUDEY, followed by TTATT IDEED if you go missed approach. (hint: think Tweety)SATAN is on the same plate: http://tiles.skyvector.com/sky/files/tpp/1008/pdf/00678R16.PDFClassic.

I often think a lot of so called hardcore simmers are way off with their 'realism'. On the Aerosoft forum they all shout and scream they won't buy the new Airbus X ONLY because it doesn't include SIDS and STARS (even though you can add them point by point). (And because it doesn't have wing flex btw...) They just don't seem to understand that what they are trying to do on their computers is NOT 'hardcore real life flying' but very strict and academic flying by the book, so to speak. BTW Another problem they have with it, is that the Airbus X isn't 'advanced' enough when it comes to what you can do with all the systems manually or when it comes to failuers. But again, they forget that what that Airbus X DOES offer is what real life Airbus pilots does everyday! Those planes are made to get the passengers from A to B as safe as possible and NOT for pilots to try out 150 different failures or to have fun with 1000 buttons. The things you can NOT do with it are things that real life pilots also never do with it, maybe once in ten years or so, when things go wrong.Anyway, this is getting very OT, but if you want to fly as realistic as possible, don't listen to hardcore simmer: listen to real life pilots. :( (I am not a real life pilot btw! But I like to listen to them.)
