September 13, 200322 yr Anyone else experienced this? Tried twice last night, again this evening. It hangs during the "Atlanta.cab" install.....can't get past it. This is a just built PC, have already installed tons of things flawlessly on a fresh XP Pro load. I install all games on their own Partition. Just defragged, removed all temp file crap before latest install...same error. No scratches on the CD either. Thanks!
September 13, 200322 yr If you've tried everything else in the Microsoft Knowledge Base file on this matter, the one thing they don't mention is to check your RAM.You may have a dodgy stick.Allcott
September 13, 200322 yr Going back to FS2002, the Microsoft CD's have had trouble running on some high speed CD-ROM drives. Try setting the drive speed down to, say, 24X either in WinXP or by using your CD-ROM software and see if the drive can read the CD. If possible, try another CD-ROM drive or your CD-RW drive (which is slower).Another trick is to copy the CDs to your hard drive and see if you can install it from there. Otherwise, you'll have to send that one back for a new one.MDavis

Over the past couple days I've loaded WinXP, Office, Norton Systemworks, Games, etc all using this CD drive. ot one problem with any except this one. (I had looked at the NB links from the Sticky in this forum already, thanks!) I'll try copying to the HD, see if that helps. Not sure how I can return it, it was a gift from MS...looking into it though....
September 14, 200322 yr You might have to try a different CD ROM. One of my CD ROM drives does the same thing, works fine with other one. Had same problem with FS2002.Matt
September 14, 200322 yr Hello All,I too had this same problem, it hung at 77% and would not go further.I took the CD out and looked at it, it seemed it had a small string of glue or something on the 4th disk. I took some disc polish, and a soft rag and polished the CD, (ultra bright tooth paste, water and a soft rag will also do the job), and completely uninstalled and removed what had been installed to that point. Upon trying install the 2nd time, I held my breath and it cruised past the 77% mark until reaching total install.Actually it was my 3rd try, as the second time, 2004 tried to reinstall INSIDE of the first install, so I had to uninstall and delete and defrag the HD. Again, after the polishing, everything went smooth. If you find a small error or line on your CD, that could be the problem, as all these CD's, I'm sure are done by the same process on the same machine? maybe not. But it worked for me.Best to all,Clayton T. Dopke (Clay)Major, USAF (retired)"Drac"
