Big difference visually between windowed and full screen mode?

Featured Replies

I've been flying windowed mode because of the ati bug, but switched back to full screen for a while and noticed a huge difference in quality of textures (better) and hardly any flickering. I'm using the ati 9800 pro. Does this make sense? I thought the quality was the same for both...billg

Windowed mode is 2D. Like you, I prefer what I see in full screen mode. I'll accept the screen flickering (ATI has stated that they'll fix the problem in the CAT 3.8's... we'll see).Even with the couple of problems the ATI cards have in full screen mode, they nevertheless make this sim look stunning.

Greg, I bought the 9800 pro a week or so ago and had some problems. Today I bought another 9800 pro and geforce fx 5900 ultra. Told the shop that if it was a compatibility problem with the ati and my system I'd bring both ati cards back and keep the geforce, or keep the 2nd ati if it was just a bad card and return it and the geforce. Turns out it was a bad card...Now the interesting part. I tried the geforce card (of course, hehe), and there is no comparison between the ati and the geforce in terms of the way the sim looks, and I mean everything--aircraft, ground textures, clouds, you name it. The ati not only looks better but it's 20 to 30% faster. I'll gladly put up with the menu flickering for a few weeks until the next drivers come out.I'll do some more testing and playing around but the ati looks like the clear winner in my books.billg

No, windowed mode is 3D in a window! They look virtually identical on my 9700 Pro . . .Noel

Is there any difference is framerate between full screen and windowed mode with the ATI cards? I have a 9600 Pro and I've always used the windowed mode 'cause I use multi-monitors for the panels, radio stack etc.

"No, windowed mode is 3D in a window! They look virtually identical on my 9700 Pro . . ."Not on mine... not even close.Panda234... yep, I'll not soon forget the day I changed out my GF4 4600 for my 9700 Pro. My jaw dropped!! It was amazing. And, as you said, faster too!

Hmm, so your card is not doing 3D in a window. Wonder why? Image quality in either mode is fantastic, and again, identical.Noel

The difference might be because of different resolution settings for the desktop and within the sim. If you've set your desktop to 16 bit, say, and resolution on the hardware tab in FS2004 to a 32-bit resolution, that would explain a difference. Size matters too, of course...Best,Martijn
