Computer build suggestions

Featured Replies

I'm considering this computer build for fsx. I want to run high detail with good frame rates.I would like your imput and any suggested changes you think I should make. ThanksAsus Sabertooth X58Intel i7980x @30-40% o'ck6 gb corsair dominator gt 2000mhz(cl 7)--I could change this to mushkin enhanced redline 1600mhz(cl 6)but the corsairs have heat speaders with fan cooling.nvidia gtx 480ocz vertex 2 60gb(for os)WD Velociraptor 600gb(for fsx and addon's)coolermaster 912 chassis(this mid-tower allows me to keep my existing computer cabinet)abs 80+ gold 900w (I may want to add another video card in the future)24x cd/dvd-rwwin 7 home premium corsair h70 cooling

Buy buy buy. You could overclock that 980X to 4.5ghz no problem with the H70 and I doubt you'll have temperature problems. Also keep the RAM you picked out since it looks like that is the higher quality especially since it can reach 2000mhz which is impressive for RAMThe only suggestions I have are to invest in an SSD around 100gb to use solely for FSX sine they can transfer faster than even a VelociRaptor can. Make sure the 480GTX you buy is one of the Superclocked EVGA ones since those will perform best.Hope your new system goes well

Disagree with the above. 1: sabertooth is overkill. Get the cheaper P6X58D-E. Almost exactly the same, minus a few features and the look. 2: I highly doubt a GTX480 will fit in that case. Get the HAF 922 Minimum. 3: ABS, never heard of them. Probably a cheap product that underperforms. Gold rating doesn't mean anything. Might die in 3 months. Get the coolermaster Silent Pro Gold 1000W if you want the extra power plus excellent quality. 4: Superclocked is a waste of money. FSX doesn't use your GPU so your spending more money for no reason. 5: Ram doesn't play an important factor in FSX. I would recommend the Mushkin as it is probably a fair bit cheaper, and no difference will be noticed in FSX. The fan isn't needed. 6: VRap is fine for FSX. SSD's can be more trouble than they're worth, and their prices are going to drop soon anyways. May as well wait. 7: I doubt you will get a stable 4.5GHz on the 980x. That's very highly OCd. 4-4.2GHz should be manageable with that cooler.

See my setup below. Works like a peach after I purchased the gtx480

Mine works like a peach after I purchased the GTX460, too :)In fact, I failed to see a noticable difference in FSX between a GTX460 and my friend's GTX480 when we flew the same planes with the same scenery and settings on the same resolution. ;)If you're building a computer predominantly for FSX, you'll be wasting money on a GTX480. It's far far better to invest more in a proper power supply (Corsair, Enermax, Seasonic, Chieftec...) and an SSD, than to spend 200+$ more on a card FSX won't even use.

Glad your enjoying your hardware Ivan, that card is a bargain. :)Having owned and tortured both That may be true ... until you start to throw some complex add-ons into the mix and or start to up the res, IQ and detail settings, then the 460 runs out of breath probably due its limited filrate and bandwidth that even its higher clock rate cant improve upon (in FS).Further the cripled 460 does nothing that a 285GTX cant do in DX9 and as a matter of fact the 460 chokes sooner probably due to the 285's superior memory bandwidth/fillrate.Depending on what your expectations are you may be happy with the 460 or you may be waisting your money becuase you'll want what a non-crippled fermi is capable of as you load FSX up.
What sort of 'complex' addons are you talking about, freebird77?
Any well rendered heavy will do with a good VC or run fast and low (take your pick) with Orbx PNW, ManhattenX or some other metro, and approach a Dreamteam airport or the type, various AI and mesh packs, now want to add weather? etc etc ...

I guess you haven't seen this RAM or this RAM then? Quick topic jacking here...

Ahem...
Well, fair warning this is NewEggs old home brand made by Tagen last time I checked and really are junk . The only PSU made by ABS worth looking at is the new 1100 made by Atng and even those are on the fair to good side.

I've been trying to say it....We saw no REAL difference in performance between a quad core system running a GTX480 and a quad core system running a GTX460 on the same resolution, with a Virtual Cockpit view of a PMDG MD11 or 747, with FSGlobal, Aerosoft Heathrow or FSDT Honolulu, as well as REX 4096x4996 clouds with typical British weather.

Great for you Ivan, please enjoy it and the sim!

Actually... I haven't :P That's a faster clock speed than my first 4 processors
