PMDG MD-11: how do I remove the markings around the cockpit window?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,I have a slight problem here. The PMDG MD-11 has some decals around the cockpit windows that I do not know where they are. How do I remove them? See the screenshot. It's about the PMDG letters and such. They are not on the fuselage bit, for that is all white, so they must come from someplace else and be pasted "over" the white fuselage, but I do not know on what bitmap they are, and thus, what should be made white in order to remove these letters.

The texture you are looking for is : PMDG_MD11_DECAL.DDS wich is situated in the texturefolder for this livery. The color of the text are the blue spots on the toplayer. The text is on the alphalayer (white characters).RegardsLeen

Hello Benjamin, look for the file PMDG_MD11_Decal.PSD. Here are all decals located, i.e. the registration on/below the wings, letters above the window frames and the titles around the nose.In order to remove the letters you simply need to fill the respective parts black in the ALPHA layer. The background layer is only needed to give those areas the necessary colour, so no changes need to be made here.Only make sure that you don't fill the whole ALPHA layer black, some areas are still needed for other details you can see on the aircraft.Best reagrds,

Thanks for the quick replies!I looked at the file you guys mentioned, and also at the alpha channel. However, everything on that alpha channel is already black... I can't make it anymore black than it is (besides, weren't alpha channels meant for reflection?). So I am a bit at a loss on how to edit this file. I enabled the "template" layer inside the decals.psd file, but most of what it shows I have no idea what it is supposed to be. I recognize the two wings, but other than that I have no idea whatsoever what is what. Could you guys help me out on that? I really have no idea what to change in this file...EDIT: Oh wait, I think I understand what went wrong... I simply copied over a decals.bmp file into my texture folder, thinking I won't have to change it (I didn't know what it was for). The psd file I looked at comes from the paintkit and apparently doesn't include any letters. Let me try to add this decal.psd file into the texture folder (after making it a proper bmp file of course) and see what happens.I only wish the paintkit's readme file would be clear on this point. It explains absolutely nothing about the paintkit...

You ware mistaken Benjamin. You did not look in the correct folder.Have a look at the file in texture.PE and texture.GE these ones have the white reg on the black alpha.

Yeah, I figured as much. When I made the repaint, I had no idea what decal.psd was for. It seemed rather insignificant, so I did not bother to make it a bmp. Then when I installed my newly made texture file into the PMDG MD-11 folder, I copied over the repainted files (engines, fuselage and tail), but not the decal file. Then I copied over from the texture.pw folder all the files, and pasted them into my new texture folder, making sure I do not overwrite any of my own files. Naturally, I had now also copied over the decal.bmp from the texture.pw folder, which does have the white markings. The decal.psd file, however, does not have any of these white markings (for as far as I could see), so if I make a bmp out of that and add it into the texture folder, the problem should be solved.

Benjamin, you are right. Independent from FS9 or FSX, the paintkit DECAL file doesn't have the letters 'enabled', so these areas are already black. Copying the DECAL texture from one of the PMDG repaints results in the picture you have posted. If you convert the DECAL file from paintkit and convert it to whatever format you need - BMP, DDS - the letters should be gone, unless you have done any changes to it.A good file management can sometimes be critcal when doing a repaint  .Good luck!

Are we talking FSX or FS9?
FS9, but does it matter? Isn't it the same for both versions? I'll try out what I told you about in the previous post. Then I'll come back and say what the result was.EDIT: Lindberg: thanks for the post! Indeed you are right: good file management is the key here. In the future I'd probably do best to just convert everything to bmp, so that I can avoid problems like I had this time.

I always ask wich sim we are talking about because sometimes there are differences. This time the procedure stays the same for FS9 and FSX.There is however a difference , FSX has the PMDG_MD11-DECAL_spec.dds file. Now I know your painting the FS9 version there is no need to pay attention to that one. That`s why I asked.CheersLeen

Tested it with the "new" decal.bmp, and the markings were gone. Just have some final details to attend to, and the paint is ready for prime time. I think I'll also mess with the alpha layer, because I think the default MD-11 textures are far too shiny. Here's a shot:
