New MS Flight! video looks like...well FSX

Featured Replies

With 3 videos out so far we are seeing a theme. Each video is hi-lighting a new aspect of the sim.Trailer = improved water rendering.Webisode1 = improved cloud rendering ( and perhaps improved lighting ).Webisode2 = improved shadowing.I suspect the sim, as it exists, is a work in progress. So it may well have a "root" of FSX, and the improvements developed and tested against that root. These featured improvements may not even make it into the final offering... but it's encouraging to see them tested in the development phase. I believe FSX achieved a restructuring of it's elements to C++ code and the consequent documentation, and a more modular design. That would allow a greater opportunity to replace parts of the FSX design while keeping the stuff that still works. This doesn't mean the design team will have to Frankenstein the sim to FSX_SP3... but rather they can concentrate on nice aspects like lighting and cloud-shadows, that we have whinged about for years. And if there are elements of dramatic change either visually or functionally, then the modular design could allow for that even late in the design phase. I would hope there is less worry over back-ward compatibility and more emphasis on actual improvements for flight. Some things were left on the table in FSX due to the breaking of "key" features from the past. And, as we are aware, some features from the past didn't survive, and are sorely missed by 3rd party designers in FSX.I think we should keep making suggestions for improvements. You never know who might be reading.( Meanwhile, my most missed aspect of scenery object design is conditional display.. we'd like some versatility of conditional display and animation, like snowy textures for winter or when snow is falling in the sim... or trees that change with the seasons and perhaps bend in the wind ).Dick
