Improve Cloud Performance with RivaTuner...

Featured Replies

This tweak assumes that you are familiar with operating RivaTuner v2.0 RC14, the latest version (You can get RivaTuner from Guru3D.com). It may also apply to other tweaking software, but I'm not familiar with anything else. While following these steps if you start getting curious simply use RivaTuner's excellent help system.Despite my low post count I have been reading these forums for a long time now, and now I feel it's time to actually contribute something.Basically, on my system it has vastly improved cloud rendering performance with an insignificant penalty in image quality. There is now much less control lag when panning around the cockpit (Usually indicative of a low fillrate, clouds are fillrate heavy), and I can set my framerate lock higher.Open up RivaTuner and click the "Customize DirectDraw and Direct3D settings" button. Go to the Textures tab and look at the "Texture filtering preferences" section. At this point you may want to set your desired "Degree of anisotropy" and Quality/Performance settings. This tweak has allowed me to max them out (for a GF3) as shown here:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/41590.jpgThe focus of this tweak however is the "Optimize more" button. Essentially what we will do is allow the graphics driver to use lower levels of anisotropy for secondary textures in FS such as clouds, distant and detailed textures. Again, you can read more on this through the help system. If you own a GF4 and above, go ahead and configure the checkboxes as shown here. Stage 0 is used for the primary textures such as scenery, and since it's not checked it will use the "Degree of anisotropy" setting you specified in the previous section, in my case "8".http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/41591.jpgFor Optimization strategy, I have "The maximum anisotropy... " set at level 2 which is the minimum level of anisotropy. Level 1 disables anisotropy and may be used in extreme situations. Unless you can really notice a significant degredation in quality, I see no reason to set it any higher. Don't even bother with disabling trilinear. If you own a GF3 (like mine) or lower, then it gets complicated. You'll actually have to enable this "Direct3D anisotropic filtering optimization" feature first through the use of RivaTuner's patch scripts. If you can't figure out how to do that using RivaTuner's help system, reply to this post saying so and I'll post the steps.

Does this help with the blurry textures?Tim

Interested parties should also check out a program called aTuner (also available at Guru3d, and elsewhere - found mine via google). aTuner allows you to select several things, including anisotropic filter optimization using a nice clean interface. Much simpler for the not-quite-so gurus like me.Blurry textures is a complicated issue. Short answer is "a little", but your machine has to be able to handle 4x AA (or better) and 4x AF (or better) and MIP details of 7-8 from within FS to get really sharp textures. Not sure there's a box out there yet that can do that with all the other bells and whistles maxed....

Hi, "Does this help with the blurry textures?`I keep sawing your post. You told the same thing with your previous system and now with your new machine, you should not get worst blurry at all and the dynamic texture is always updated before the aircraft from far. Now I am wondering how is your level of blurry. You have to use anasotropy 4x in the display video card, using 8X anasotropy you will lose near 6 fps. Also edit the fs9.cfg TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=9.500000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=4.500000-Try to lock the FPS slider to 25 or 35 etcUsing the mip map slider more than 5 is not recommended, you will lose many FPS near 5 fps and get autogen flicker.I have 2.5ghz and, 128 mb Gforce Ti4200 8x, I did not get blurry. Resolution and Antialasing is the Key, I use 1024x768 2x antialasing, all shadows disabled, all others to full, mesh to 85 %, (forget about mesh to 100%) clouds draw distant to 40 mil, clouds percentage to 100%.ThanksChris Willis[link:fsw.simflight.com/FSWMenuFsSim.html]Clouds And Addons For MsFs

Hi, The Attachment #3, Attachment #4, appears that you have more problems than a blurry texture, all your texture are screw up and not rendered at all. I never get these non rendered and blocky texture from far at all. It appears like your system is not able render the ground, which is not normal with your system. In Attachment #4 I saw many programs started at the bottom right, I am wonder how much software are using memory with fs2004.Check you AGP aperture in your BIOS and see how it is set in MB64, 128, 256 etc. If set with 256mb, try with 128 MBGo to fs9.cfg and edit:Increase the value of this in fs9.cfg:TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=400Also edit the fs9.cfg TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=9.500000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=4.500000-Try to lock the FPS slider to 25 or 35 etcYou have to use anasotropy 4xI Recommend: -Do not use the internal Fs2004 antialasing disabled, only used from external in the driver display, 2x or 4x.-Reduce the Mesh to 85% , you will not see major difference in details but in fps will drop for nothing.-Disable the shadows scenery-Clouds draw distant to 40 mile and clouds percentage to 100%-Disable the addons scenery dynamic, only if this is not related to FSSE Lago product. If still not working:Uninstall your driver and reinstalledDelete fs9.cfg, start fs2004, start a flight and close fs2004 and redo the fs9.cfg tweaking from above.ThanksChris Willis[link:fsw.simflight.com/FSWMenuFsSim.html]Clouds And Addons For MsFs

ThanksThat particular screen shot is Mega Scenery.Tim

Anisotropic filtering optimization will allow you to use higher levels of AF for scenery textures. This will make textures viewed at an angle look sharper, but won't improve the actual texture resolution.

BUMP.

Tim,In simple terms, you are asking too much of your system. Turn some of the sliders down in the game. There isn't a system out ther capable of running all those sliders to the max without having a perforumacne hit somewhere., Start with reducing the scenery density and autogen scenery by a notch. You certainly need to set the fps limiter from `unlimited` to a realistic figure of say, 30fps, and as Chris suggests, you need to control the Anti-Aliasing from outside the sim. Another alternative would be to increase the resolution if your monitor is capble of it and switch off AA altogether. 1600x1200x32 with 8xAF is remarkably similar to a lower res with all the frame-sapping elctrickery switched on.If you set your expectations accorifing to yur hardware you will remove those texture fill problems.Allcott
