Suggestion for AVSIM

Hey, Bob. :)I didn't answer your question on the other thread, and since this seems related, I'll take a shot at it. :7>Its a good idea Will, but I have a suspicion that the folks>upset over distribution are actually suffering from a hidden>desire to be payware authors, but can't bring themselves to>admit that to themselves or the community. Hidden desire? Are we pulling a Freud here? Nah, sorry... I am freeware because I want to be. If I didn't want to be, I wouldn't be. And because I made the choice (and as I said before, my reasons or anyone else's are nobody's business) I don't like it when people try to change that.>Its just a theory,>but the thread we were involved in did make that theory at>least plausable. It was fun having that discussion and I find>it really cool to come away with an idea I hadn't had at the>beginning....and it makes sense...pure hunger for power seems>oddly unlikely to me, I only suggested it as I had no other>theory that fit the evidence. Not exactly. You don't seem to be joining dots here, Bob (no offense). The evidence says people go payware WHEN THEY WANT TO. That is the bottom line. If AVSIM decided to do this and for some reason chose to use anything I did, I'd agree BECAUSE THEY ASKED. What I don't like is somebody deciding the destiny of my work for me, because I chose to do things the way I did for a reason.>>If I'm right and we face a hidden envy factor within vocal>freeware authors, they will likely find themselves objecting>to your idea also, as they remain unpaid...the real unrequited>need that causes the opposition. No envy here, man. :) As I said before, if I wanted to join the gang, I could. If I envied them, I'd actually WANT to join them, would I not? So resisting commercial use of one's work is actually the contrary of what your theory states.>>Course, I could be wrong....Yeah, I think you are having one big problem. You're thinking about the human flaws, not the human virtues. I don't have a problem with distribution because of my flaws (i.e. greed) but because when I release my work for free I trust other people's virtues (i.e. honesty and respect for my wishes). So when stuff like this happens, you feel kind of backstabbed. You don't put any value to violations of your requests, but many of us do, and just as I (try to) respect your views, I'd appreciate if you respected mine without trying to make me look like the greedy child for having those views. I am glad to be talking to a developer, makes reasoning easier, since we both know what's involved in developing stuff. Hopefully the incoming input to this thread will be level-headed and that way we can have a good discussion. Best regards,Daniel Pimentel.

"This scenery is freeware and is copyrighted. You may not include this scenery in any pay-ware in any form, no matter what, no way, no how...without my written consent....."I found this in the readme.txt of a scenery file released by an author having the name of Bob Bernstein. Any relation to you? It's right here at Avsim. Seems like a pretty restrictive clause to me.... Some hidden desire to make money? Freud, where are you when I need you :)

Forgive me, I've only read a small portion of this post, but I would like to add my two cents.I HAVE made thousands of dollars working in the flight-sim development industry. After about two years, I found that it was about the LEAST enjoyable thing I have ever done. With regard to the comment about "secret desires" I say this, walk a mile in my shoes friend. I put a restrictive copyright on my latest offering, not because I wish I could be paid for it, but because I think that I would feel cheated somehow if someone else did. Make sense? :)

I'd agree to that - anyhow that's my personal opinion only - but this is not to say that there are others who may struggle with their internet connections... the responsibility issue of making a CD is too complicating IMHO - some people have to take responsibility of it and that will be a very demanding job...I've always uploaded and downloaded my files thru 56k, sometimes as big as 10mbs and never less than 3mbs.... I'd still appreciate it because quality freeware takes time to download, and when i take it into FS and finds out that it's literally as good as it gets, then i know all that time, has been well worth it :)Cheers,

Cheers,

Dickson Chan

You're 100% correct, Tom :) Some file library contributors can be such Prima Donnas :(

Quote from MS Flight Team Lead: "We’ve made some guesses"

As a developer, in this case aircraft repaints of a great freeware models, I don't allow my files to be put anywhere else without permission. However for my personal use, I put it on a media (CD), I did it for backup purpose, I cannot keep all my downloaded files on the hard disk. It would be thousands of Megabytes even more. The reason of putting all freeware files to CD and sell it, it's not a good way and against the author's wishes. Case like this happens in eBAY or even FSPlanet. The owner of FSPlanet clearly admits to me, that he also put files on CD and sell it for those user who got 56K connection and cannot experience great big freeware downloads. These days, internet cafe got CD Burning facilities which you can use and download all big files and put it on CD. Almost everywhere in the world has internet cafe, it's no good reason to put all freeware files to a CD and sell it.If I got connection like Dickson, I wouldn't mind downloading big files, if it's good, to my likings and interest, just hit the download button. Then I can do something else, like chatting for instance.Avsim is the only site I know that provides freeware files without charging people any pennies, unlike the allnodesbusy site, which charge people to get access faster, download the old files which have been long archived and other benefit. It's quite reasonable for them to do that, but it's not reasonable at all to site such as FSPlanet....too pathetic to find every freeware files poached by the ###### and make it available only to First class members, even if you click download, it won't download, his reason, it's being on waiting list for the server to respond to the request, but I don't think it's happening at all after many attempts.Anyway....I don't agree to the idea of putting freeware files to a CD and sell it.

"Alas, a good idea shot down by the potential pettiness of a few...That's what I was afraid of. Even a respected site like AVSIM can't be "trusted" with such an endeavor. I thought being honored to be included in such a CD would be reward enough, but I guess I am wrong.Oh well, just a thought."That is a pretty poor response. READ the reasoning behind the "why not". Those reasons are far superior in thinking and logistics than your cry-baby "I didn't get my way". Now AVSIM is the bad guy with you because they won't use your idea? I also don't understand the "being honored" part either. If you note, Bear picks good, but not popular objects now for his write-ups. He changed his approach a while back. You're not looking at all the pieces to the puzzle. As Tom says, it would be nightmare to add this type of work to a staff that is kept busy as it is, and support would be out of the question for such a product. Do as I suggested in a previous post. Download while you're in bed at night. I know traffic is slower everywhere then. But don't be mad at the designers, Avsim, or believe it is caused by the "potential pettiness of a few". That's called whining.Don

No response, Bob? :)DP
