October 15, 200322 yr This has already been answered in a thread yesterday, but briefly, all you have to do is change the wording on the "Title" line on the 1st line of the relevant aircraft.cfg section. Make it "Cessna 172 SP" or whatever the default Cessna is titled.Brian
October 15, 200322 yr Hmmm... wouldn't it be better to make the change in the .flt file instead, otherwise you'll end up with two planes with the same name, if you are following the install instructions. (the original C172 is left untouched), another thing is imo it's best to not keep the "original" planes, names etc intact. I have done the exercises with various planes and thats no big deal replacing the plane in a lesson/adventure, just open the corresponding .flt file and look for this entry:(Plane.0) <-- square bracketsAircraft=Cessna Skyhawk 172SPand change it to:(Plane.0) <-- square bracketsAircraft=Cessna Skyhawk 172SP Kangan Batman TAFE by RealAir SimulationsThe files are found here in default install : C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9LessonsThere are folders for each traing sequence, student, private etcJust a thought.
October 15, 200322 yr Where is the .flt file again where I can make this change? I looked in the LessonsStudent folder and each flight has an .exe, abl. and .WX file but I don't see the .flt file (I checked to make sure I had show hidden files checked). I also browsed the flights folder but didn't see anything there. I'm sure this is very simple, but...... Thanks in advance for you help. Steve J.
October 15, 200322 yr There should be 3 types of files in your lessons folder and just to make sure here is my full path:C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9LessonsstudentThe tree types are .abl , .WX and .FLT . By default these 3 types of files will not be associated with any program and they will normally display a generic icon. If you don't see a file named Lesson 1.flt in the above folder try the following:Choose the "view" menu at the top of the folder, select the "Show Details.." - a window will appear check "type" and press "OK" now you should see the file extension on all files.(I'm using a national version of Windows XP and I'm guessing how the above menus are named in english so it might not be 100% correct translated)The .abl file is the lesson and it can be read and edited with wordpad like any other text file. The .WX file is the weather and it can't be viewed by one of the default viewers. The .FLT file is the one we are interested in, just open it with wordpad.I hope this helps..
October 16, 200322 yr pbn,Thanks for your reply. I appreciate the detailed explanation. I'm using the same path (C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9Lessonsstudent), but my student folder has .abl (varying sizes) , .WX (92KB) and application files (8KB) but no .flt files. The application file for each lesson has the airplane icon and when I left or right click on it it launches fs9 and starts the actual lesson. I've checked my folder options and show hidden files is checked (in case the .flt file is hidden) and I've viewed the files in various formats (tiles, icons, list, etc, but can find no .flt file to edit. Steve J.P.S. full fs9 install, Windows XP Home, AMD XP1800+/512/Ti4200
October 16, 200322 yr Hi Steve! The reason you can't find the .flt files is because you are looking in the wrong location. FS9 is different than FS2002 in the sense that flights are stored in your local user directory. The path where you'll find your .flt files is:C:Documents and SettingsMy DocumentsFlight Simulator Files*.flt. Each flight is accompanied by a .wx file which stores the weather situation for each corresponding flight.Hope this helps!James
October 16, 200322 yr James-Thanks. I don't know why this is so hard....:-hmmm I found my "relocated" fs9.cfg file easily and have edited it from day 1. I used your path, but in my Flight Simulator Files file I have .PLN files and .WX files from a few saved flights, but not the .flt files for all the lessons.Could you please check the path and confirm? Also, since I also can't seem to locate the instructions given in the previous thread either....can anyone else confirm that this is the best way to use the Real Air 172 in the fs9 lessons? Thanks, Steve J.
October 16, 200322 yr The 8KB files are the .flt files. To open them, click once to highlight, hold down the SHIFT key and right click on the file, you should get a choice to open with below the open option, choose open with and choose notepad. Or just open notepad and select the file.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/43330.jpgKurt M
October 16, 200322 yr Kurt -Thanks for the picture and reminder how to open the file with notepad. It's strange, but on my Windows XP Home file listing the .abl and .WX file extensions appear, but the .FLT extensions do not show.However.......I tried renaming {Plane.0} in a lesson 7 by bracketing the current "Aircraft=Cessna Skyhawk 172SP" and replacing with a new line "Aircraft=RealAirSimulationsC172SP", but it did not load the Real Air 172 for that lesson. I also tried "Aircraft=Cessna Skyhawk 172SP Kangan Batman TAFE by RealAir Simulations" but that didn't load it either. I checked both the original 172 and RealAir 172 aircraft config files but didn't see any other obvious names to use.Well, I'm going to give it a rest for this evening. Rob, or anyone, it you see the problem here, would appreciate any help. Although I thought using the RealAir 172 in a few lessons would be nice, I am enjoying it very much in my regular simflying. I've recently started flying last month's National Air Tour using the RealAir 172 and FS Meteo real weather....having a great time. Thanks again,Steve J.
October 16, 200322 yr Hello again - The reason I suggested altering the aircraft.cfg is that you only have to do it once - if you are following the complete training course, you'd have to change every one of the .flt files. Also, If you've got the RealAir C172, I can't see why anyone would want the default!Just open the default C172 aircraft.cfg, note carefully what's in the "Title" field, and copy that into the RealAir cfg, instead of the name supplied. It has to be exact, though - the slightest deviation, and the change won't workBrian
October 16, 200322 yr Thanks, Brian. I guess you are right. I will be using the RealAir C172 from now on, so perhaps your approach is the one to use (+ I couldn't get the renaming the plane in the .flt files to work for me). I'm at work now, but will try it when I get home this evening.Steve J.
October 16, 200322 yr Brian, I tried this also and it didn't load the RealAir 172 for the lessons. I copied the C172 title in aircraft.cfg and overwrote the title in the RealAir C172 aircraft.cfg, but didn't work for me. I then bracketed the C172 title thinking that there might be a conflict for two aircraft to have the same title, but that also didn't allow the RealAir 172 to load in the lessons. I'm think I'm about ready to give up on this.....it would be a nice to have, but not worth the time this is taking to figure it out. Have you been able to get this to work? Thanks, Steve J.
October 16, 200322 yr Hi.If all you want is the Flight model, Rename your "aircraft.cfg" and "Cessna172SP.air" to ...ori each, or make a copy of them, thenCopy the ".cfg" and ".air" files from your RA zip file into your "172" subdirectory. Later you can reverse the proc. if you do not like it. TV
