580 GTXs Get while they're Hot

Featured Replies

Wow. Mine was delivered today, and I will install it tomorrow. Too tired tonight. I ordered it only 2 days ago from NewEgg, and delivery time was absolutely incredible! This weekend I will be giving this super overclocked 580 a test. I KNOW how my 285 performed in many airports and locations. I'm totally aware of my frames everywhere since I usually leave the frame counter on. I've been very, very pleased with my 285, and if this card beats it in any way, I'm going to be one happy camper.Stan
Installed it this afternoon in my office. Brought the computer back home, and I haven't tried FSX yet. I will try it tonight and report my impressions tomorrow. It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. After the connections, I was getting a hard drive issue. Called Jetline, and they answered in one ring as always, and Ken told me the card probably changed my bios. He was right. After following his instructions, I was up withing 2 minutes. What a great company that Jetline Systems is! Looking forward to my first flight tonight.Stan

Quick results from torturing the 580 I meant to post Yesterday, Soory But I'm just too busyHasn't been benched at all but here are some numbers on the extreme end of filtering and general IQ goodness that this card just handled rather well. Also no comments yet about BP=X and what this card can and cannot handle or if there is even any need... Very good quick review. Are you following Nick's suggestion in NVidia Inspector? Do you uncheck AA in FSX and set filtering to Trilinear?Stan

Hi Stan,II should have mentioned, AA unchecked in FSX and Filtering set to Aniso in FSX, also I had the Frames limited to 28 from with-in FSX.I am very well aware of all the tuning guides, etc and like to enjoy the highest IQ so this was just a quick run at max settings and test with no added tweaks and... this was very nice, I'll be happy to post HD video at some point and share all settings when the sweet spot is found. How are your test going?Make sure you rebuild the cfg or at least delete the multiple entries of display devices (the cfg may list your old as well as the new).Cheers!

I got mine up and running today.  Very nice.  Smooth with a high FPS without OC yet.  If I try hard I can almost hear it running.jja

With all my sliders to the right, and water at 2Xhigh, I see a definite improvement in "smoothness". Frames are somewhat higher (about 10%) but everything is noticably more fluid. I haven't installed the latest drivers (262.99)but just the driver disk that came with the card. I will do that tomorrow (Saturday), and look forward to what that driver does. I'm using NVidia Inspector and I believe the card seems to be a good investment so far. I have much experimenting to do, but I should make progress this weekend. I'm still tweaking, but this looks like a winner.

Hi Stan anything new to report?  I did have to upgrade to Afterburner 2.1.0 Beta 4 to get the voltage control to work.  But other than that pleased with the card.jja

I really won't do the kinds of specific benchmark tests you are doing...and I commend you for it. They are very scientific. What I've done so far has been to try all my saved flight scenarios with which I am very, very familiar on my 285 card, and compare the fluidity and smoothness of the flights with my 580 card. So far, I've been more than pleased with the performance of the flights. I've increasd the traffic at airports, roads, and water, and haven't rocked the card yet! If only FSX would function flawlessly in DX10, then perhaps we'd see even more from this card. Supposedly, this card is made for DX11. I'm throwing everything I have in my flights, GEX,REX,ASE,FS Genesis, UT,FSDiscover, and all the addons work well. It seems that even when my frames drop to 18-25 FPS, there doesn't seem to be any stuttering or stopping as there might have been with the 285. I would still prefer to have NHancer over NVIDIA Inspector. I hope Nick is able to create a version for the new breed of drivers we have. I loved that program for my NVidia graphic drivers.Talk to you soon.Stan

Glad to hear!  Sounds like you are a happy camper.  My experience is similar as FSX seems more fun now.  Also the BP=0 tweak was beating the 460 to death and the 580 handles it very well.Off to fly.jja

I don't use that BP=0 tweak. I use this: [bUFFERPOOLS]RejectThreshold=131072What do you think is the difference? Is one better than the other?Stan

Probably no difference unless you want to run with no FPS limiter then use the rejectthreshhold.jja.

You can check around, but it is pretty much a fact BP=0 is just asking for blurries if you are sensative to that and it will happen pretty quick unless you are just doing bush flying at low speed or using very low res and other low settings. At a minimum run with a small BP value of 512KB or what ever works for you, but I am starting to become a beleiver in the rejectThreshold tweak plus adding a sizable buffer or at least stock (if you dont specify it will run with 4MB poolsize). However recently I have gone back to NO tweaks to see what I can tune too and test with as there are some interesting things that this card can do with FSX...Have you guys tried 32xsAA yet? Try it with decently high settings, it is at least tolerable FPS wise and if you just turn the dang FPS counter off and look at the smooth ultra sharp display...its just powerful enough over my 480 that it now seems to be a real option, even at 1920x1200 Try it :)

Hi folks, i have posted my issues with my 580 in another thread [here post #10] but there seems to be a little more activity in this one.Basicly i am having micro-stutters on this card but was getting very smooth performance on my GTX470. I haven't seen anyone else comment on the same issue, any thoughts? Please read my orignal post if you would like more information. Any help would be greatly appreciated.RegardsDave

I just ordered this card. Any tricks with install / FSX / FSX.cfg I should worry about?
