E8500 to I5 760

Featured Replies

Hi guys,I'm looking for a budget friendly upgrade on my PC. My combination at the moment is E8500 @ 3.9 on ASUS P5QL pro,GTS 250 with 4GB RAM on windows 7.I'm thinking about an I5 760 on new Asus board. Would I see a significant improvent by going this way?I only use FSX.Thanks

You'd be going dual core to quad core so in FSX yes.

Thanks for the reply. I am actually going to return that GTS 250 and get a GTX 460 1Gb instead.Would going to an I5 760 still be a factor in performance?

If you clock it 4+ GHz it will help. Still though, I doubt you'll see a huge improvement over your [email protected]

Thanks for the input. That's what I kind of felt, but I guess you never know.On the other hand,I just put in a GTX 460 and it made a huge difference, cristal clear image, quite high FPS.I'm impressed.I guess that was an upgrade that was a lot cheaper than replacing MB,CPU and RAM.It just extended the life of the old E8500.Thanks again

Yep the graphics card should help out but if you're considering making the jump to an i5 the time is around now, Newegg has some great deals this month and I think I just saw an i5 gaming deal. Glad to hear the GTX460 is going well for you!

Thanks again guys for the input.Just to follow up,if an I5 760 wouldn't be a dramatic improvement over my present system, what would?Would going to an I9 750 do the trick? Thanks

I think the i5 760 would be an improvement on your system it's 4 cores and it'll clock to the same speed as an E8500.Do you mean an i7 950? If that's what you mean then yes that will be an enormous improvement. Both should be a great improvement since you're moving to an LGA1156 motherboard, DDR3 RAM, and you'll have two extra cores. If you really want the best performance the i7 950 will deliver but the i5 760 should be a bit cheaper so here's the cost breakdown:i5-760 + ASUS P7P55D Pro = $344.98i7-950 + ASUS P6X58D Premium = $584.98

After much research and reading I think the I5 760 road would be the one for me. Maybe my wife will let me give myself an early Xmas present...:)Thanks for the help.

I think you'll see a nice performance increase with the i5 760 and 460GTX and it also leaves you a future upgrade path to the i7-875K...
