Moving Win7

Featured Replies

Being the nerd that I am, I just bought a new SSD. I want make that the boot drive. Is there a way to do this without it being a clean install so I have to reinstall all my software? Between FSX and all my addons, that will take forever. Is there a way to sort of just "move" wIndows7 or tell it to install it on a new drive and keep the user and registry settings? Anyone ever try this?

At first glance you could just take an image of your original drive and restore it to the SSD *BUT* - I do not have an SSD but IIRC they use a different sector format than mechanical drives.I'd check with your backup software company to see if restoring an image made from a mechanicall drive will affect the sector scheme on a SSD or you could ruin the SSD.If it adjusts properly, then all you need is good image backup software software to backup and restore the boot drive. You'd have to pay attention to active partitions and such but it should be doable.Vic

You should be able to image your drive with no issues. This image will be a copy of the source drive, but you can resize the partition with a drivepartitioning application.
