XFX RADEON HD6870 - any good?

Featured Replies

I am thinking on getting a XFX RADEON HD6870. it has 5!! monitor outputs and eyefinity technology. Anyone who has tried this with FSX.

Considering it's a lower card than the 5870, I'd stick with the GTX470, where I know I'm safe. Or wait and get the GTX570.

It's only 12% slower than a 5870 at stock, and the 6870 I guess OCs to 1GHz easy. (This is from what I've read from reviews on NewEgg.)

I need the 4 video-outputs since i want to run 4 monitors to fsx. if i choose GTX470 then i need 2 cards - but will it be possible with nvidia to make one wide-3-monitor view and 1 view/monitor for avionics?

Apple sells Mini-DP to DVI adapters, they're $30 at BestBuy. So with that in mind it would be cheaper going with Eyefinity, Setting up Eyefinity.

Or use triplehead2go. Works amazing. May be slightly more expensive, but you won't need to spend hours tweaking your FSX.cfg trying to get rid of all the issues faced with ATI cards in FSX. Go for it if you want, but a GTX470 or 480 is the best cards out there for FSX.

Warning: There are 2 types of Mini-Displayport to DVI adapters: Passive (about $3 each) and Active (about $85+ each!!!), and due to current supply limitations, Eyefinity cards only support up to 2 passive adapters! Also only use AMD approved active adapters

You don't need TripleHead2Go, since Eyefinity like TH2Go Eyefinity lets you set-up a single window spanning multiple monitors, so you don't have to fool around aligning the views for each monitor in the fsx.cfg (and also get them to pan at the same time!) with bezel compensation.Cheers,- jahman.

I'm meaning use TH2Go for a single nvidia card, and FSx tweaks for the countless graphical issues ATI cards create in FSX.

If you don't mind getting your hands dirty and doing some trialing, ATi cards can be quite nice. I still want some people to expiriment with ATi cards OCd and the affects of the Shader Clock on NV cards (Shader and Core at the same speed, Shader at stock, and Shader at 50MHz over default, all done in MSI AB, I'm looking for local averages.)

50hz? You wont see nada, zip and zero...invested in many a GPU cooler, cranking up shaders has decent increase in some shader intensive games but FSX isnt one of those, even on the 580 with its stock cooler but using a bit more agressive fan speed algorithm 100hz just on the shader clock wont do anything very measurable in FSX either, but a little here and there does start to add up to increased smoothness and higher FPS, just make sure it is all stable underload. Some simple math: IF say we where very generous and accounted the GPU for up to 35% of the overall performance of FSX at Settings X and X=maxing all the releavant GPU hungry items, And IF shader clock was even tied to 100% of GPU performance , what would 50hz be? 50hz would be about 3.5% bump in the GPU (again Only even if it was = to 100% of GPU performance) and 3.5% of 35% of total effective GPU contribution would be? 1%, so at 40FPS we would get .4 FPS increase? But that is not even right, not even close because the shader clock is only a percentage of overall GPU ffectiveness. But why take my word for it or anyone elses, just try it and see! :)

I can't, I have a laptop with integrated Radeon 3100 graphics and an AMD Turion RM-70 x2 at 2GHz... and the BIOS is locked. The only desktops in the house are from 2000~'02 and are mini ATX OEMs.

Back on to the OP's question, the answer is, yes it is a good strong card, but the nVidia GTX 470 and 480 are stronger in FSX terms, and dont require all the tweaking ATi cards require. Our recommendation? If you dont mind doing a LOT of tweaking and testing, go the ATi. If you want to just 'plug and play'(sorta) go nvidia. For the 3 screen setup, TH2Go is just as good, if not better than eyefinity.

BP=0 seems to have the biggest perf gain for me (no SM3 being used.)
TH2Go is just as good, if not better than eyefinity.
Set 3 monitors in portrait and set Eyefinity on in Catylist and you dodge the 5:1 ratio super wide FOV (same applies to 4 monitors,) a plus is the resolutions aren't limited (unless you're running six 30" monitors, then it's limited to 1920x1200) and you don't need a second card.Does anyone here have an AMD 6870 card?

What kind of tweaks is necessary for ATI? How bad is it? Some very amazing ATI demos are on youtube, for example this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmBn9Wh_eII&feature=relatedAbout nvidia, if i want to run 3 screens through their new surround technology i need SLI setup, right?

Yep, two cards in SLI.
