How Do You Enjoy Your Flight Sim?

Featured Replies

Micheal,Seeing as you live in Canberra, you might want to try my Australian Flight Suggestion utility that is in the Avsim library. It might help relieve a few of your sypmtoms because it suggests a randomised Australian departure and destination airfield based upon certain bits of information you key into it. You'll end up in a completely different place in Australia every time you fly, so you won't get bored with the same airfields and the same scenery. Also, like another posted suggested, keep the flight shorter rather than longer. I would never fly longer than 45 minutes to an hour. With the utility, you can specify how far you want to fly, so you can make sure you are not given a flight that might last too long.

Michael, I think I enjoy simming more than ever for the simple reason that I understand it so much more than even a few months ago! Up until I first "FLEW" (which by the way was Combat Flight Simulator 3 years ago ) I knew SQUAT about computors but I knew I "LOVED" airplanes, but I also knew I could never be a pilot in real life due to the cash outlay! WELL NOW I CAN "FLY" ANYTIME I WANT! The best part is (in my way of thinking ) I can now also fly the planes I really love such as the DC-3, Spitfire, Bi-planes, ETC!!! To answer your question= I enjoy simming VFR with vintage aircraft in real time with RX! AUTO PILOT ? WHATS an AUTO PILOT!!!!! Have a great day! Jukebox My famous quote, "Someday I will fly in a real B-17!":-) :-)

I don't think I'll ever lose my passion for Flight simming since, due to financial and personal reasons, I can't afford to fly for real.Flight Simulator gives me that chance. Sure, there are days when I don't feel like firing it up but I just take a day off and go for it the next time.Case in point would be Thursday night. I was tired, but I really wanted to fly. So I fired FS9 up, took a short 1.5 hour hop from KBFI to KIDA, and I was happy.

I've never been much for the "big iron" but I do like to fly around with it once in a while. I like Melvin Raffi's viewable cabins and exterior stuff, and some of the "big iron" artists are truly blessed. But what really makes this a pure enjoyment is not the high altitude fast stuff. It is the 5,000' to 15,000' altitude flights in the single and twins that are really fun. Several weeks ago I did the "Route 66" flights listed on the DC-3 Airways site. All the way at under 15,000'. Then I flew from Boston to Edinburgh, Scotland in a Baron at about 6,000'. Then I flew from Wilmington, NC to Chicago to Vancouver, BC at 1500'AGL. THEN (deep breath, calm down), I decided to fly the perimeter of the North American continent in 250 to 350 mile legs and started at San Diego. At first I flew the R4D, and now I'm in the Mooney up at Kodiak Island in Alaska for the trip down the "Alaskan Keys" :-lol. As I continue around Alaska, I will fly different singles and twins at altitudes from 500' to 15,000'. I plan to go across the top of Canada to the west coast of Greenland and down to Prince Edward Island and back to the east coast of Canada and on south down to the Keys then across to the Gulf Coast and down the coast of Mexico and Central America to the Panama Canal then up to San Diego. I get happy thinking about all the adventures ahead. After this trip, I plan to fly around the world with a single like a 182 or 180. No way to get bored as long as FSNavigator can find the airports and the fuel boys can find the filler thingy.:-lol!!!!In addition every three or four days, I'm flying one of the Meljet 777s from Key West to Vancouver just because I can.:-hah When I get tired of it, I just save it and fly my perimeter trip for a week or so. Bored?? Not me. Life is just plain too exciting to get bored.

Hi Brian, now that's interesting... besides flying the sim, I play drums, fly stunt kites (the Fanatic being my favourite), play board games and I did quite a lot of RC flying (gliders). :)Back to the topic at hand. Just like my sig says, I enjoy bush flying and the bunch over at BFU is one of the friendliest there is. Lots of interesting "missions" to fly, in all types of weather. I had the time of my (virtual) life in FUIII flying for the BFU...Since then I flew all sorts of aircraft, including some big "FMC" iron. Ever tried to cross the Atlantic in a fully loaded DC-6? Boring? Think again! Coupled with Radar Contact, real weather and some bad weather it becomes a very eventful adventure. One of the strong points of FS is the ability to create add-ons relatively easily. I'm always fiddling with things, from recreating the area where I live to be as accurate as possible, to customizing panels, paint jobs, making complete airfields, the list is endless...Always something to do. But Michael is right, one would think that the further we go, the friendlier our PC's will become. Not so, one must become almost an expert to set up the darn thing so it will run our simulators satisfactory. Regards,JureBush Flying Unlimited]"At home in the wild"[/i

nice topic :-) I 1st found avsim a few years ago and BFU became my home. At the same time i picked up Gmax and lived in the design forums. Being an outdoorsman I flew trips from my home to southern Canada where I go on real life fishing trips. I built the cabin that we frequent yearly in Lake of the Woods and scouted out new fishing spots where i built my own campsites. As my dreams do outweigh my wallet, I built a virtual home, hangar and runway in my "spot" and improved on it over the years. Soon enough i was able to build my own planes to enjoy at my "home", along with boats, and other vehicles to explore my land. I began shaping my FS world in my image. Thanks to all the freeware design tools its very easy... getting started is the hard part.I think most people think that they must be able to create something that is of the quality found in this library. Believe me, you will enjoy it more if its yours, no matter the quality. Plus the talent in that library is just mind blowing.my advice is simple, make the sim YOURS. What YOU want it for.refreshing to read positive posts, better than the I quits. :-)joe

Hi FolksThanks for all the great responses. This is a great forum!Like many of you said, I think I need to mix things up a little bit cause I hate repetitions. Mixing the big irons with the 'low and slow' would be the way to go with me. And as some of you suggest, we need to "enjoy in moderation", just like all the good drops we enjoy from time to time. I too have other hobbies (tennis, SACD/DVD-A and ....) Have fun...Michael TanCanberra
