Overclocking i 950

Featured Replies

As for some info:I run my 920 @ VCore 1.4 in BIOS 24/7. I couldn't care for lower setting for my 4.2Ghz. I believe it would run stable with two notches down, but hey, it ran 30hr stable on prime, so I'm OK with it. It runs up to max of some 76c (room temp around 22c) with my good watercooling setup. 920s can go up 100c I believe, but that will of course damage the CPU in time. I think 920s turn off at 105c, if I'm not mistaken.I think most of people are just too careful with OCing. I mean, so what if you burn the hardware? Cost you couple of hundreds. So what? You buy 500€ cards, and you are scared about a CPU? No risk no fun really...Aaaanyway, I go pretty quickly when it comes to OCing, I google myself what people do usually with the current hardware, and just go from there. Mostly I read people using 1.35V on 920, so I set it there, and see how far the clock will go. Then I read a bit about any setting, and voila. I have it up and running in some 1-2hrs. Then it's just a matter of fine tuning, that happens in next 1-2 weeks, as that can't be done instantly.

Nope..bad advice. Don't do that; you hurt my feelings !

I ain't that profound in reverse psychology, sorry!! :Big Grin:

May I add the comment that as you increase the FSB be *weary* of leaving the Vcore set to "Auto" in BIOS as you can end up running over the max Vcore for your chip.

Erm, there is no FSB on the i7. But you do up BCLK Frequency

Did you change your ram timings to the below or did you leave them on auto? You may need to bump your DRAM voltage up to 1.65 - 1.66. It would help if you posted all your BIOS settings like I did above. Your DRAM, UCLK and QPI Link freqs all have to be in agreement. Download OCCT and run the CPU test on auto for an hour and see if that passes. Your core temps are fine and at this point I think your CPU vcore is fine, you probably need to adjust something else.DRAM Timing Control1st Information :CAS# Latency: 7DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay: 7DRAM RAS# PRE Time: 7DRAM RAS# ACT Time: 20What are all your voltages set to?
Hello dear (and friends)... I am please to announce that I have sucessfully OC my CPU and DRAM to 4.02 Ghz-- Stable!... whooohooo ! Thank you, everyone for all your assitance.--- I ran Prime 95 and I am glad I don't see that message about some guy by the name of 'Lucas" that don't wana work anymore, and then turns from Green to Magenta... It's a good feeling. :Applause: John :Peace:

Now go and check out how your FSX is running!

Congrats man. Enjoy.

That's great - now check it with OCCT. Prime is no longer a good measure of a clocked FS system. OCCT will check the CPU and memory interface which is where most clocks fail with FSX. It's the heat and voltage that destroy CPU's so any clock that stays within the thermal and voltage limits is fine. The I7's are simple to clock, you have to really careless with voltage and temps to damage one, so be careful but not afraid.Vic
