SSD setup
Djang0 replied to Djang0's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etc
Hi guys so once again I am setting up my system and I just wanted to check best practice running my SSDs for best gaming performance. All your thoughts are welcome. 2X Samsung Evo 860 SATA SSDs, one for Win10 and one for flight sims. Most recent firmware. Formatted with NTFS file system (OS drive has 3 partitions created by the Win10 installer). Q1) Does the choice of file system matter for an SSD in terms of performance? Q2) Enable drive provisioning, yes or no? Q3) Best Samsung Magician drive mode? Q4) Will using system memory as drive cache effect gaming with 16GB RAM? -

I have some questions re setting up an SSD, I have: # Samsung Evo 860 1TB SATA SSD. # Windows7. Initially I wanted to just add the SSD as additional storage to put DCS on. Q1) In BIOS my storage mode is IDE, does the SSD *need* AHCI enabled to run with all it's features enabled - particularly TRIM function? (I believe with Windows7 I would have to reinstall Windows after enabling AHCI.) Q2) I was going to: # Upgrade the SSDs firmware. # Enable Performance power profile. Is there anything else I need to enable in windows to help maximise performance of the drive? Q3) Does the choice of file system matter for an SSD in terms of performance? Q4) I was going to disable: # Windows search. # Windows indexing service. # System restore on the SSD drive. Is there anything else I need to disable in windows to avoid unnecessary writes?

What I'm looking for is memory to complement my i7-9700K and GTX1080Ti but I'm not planning to OC the memory initially. Only as the system gets dated would I want a good OC from the memory, I'm looking for modules with Samsung B-Die chips. As a rule of thumb which of the following 32GB 2x16 kits would you guys consider: 3000 CAS16 £250 (non B-Die) 3000 CAS15 £275 (non B-Die) 3000 CAS14 £350 3200 CAS16 £280 (non B-Die) 3200 CAS15 £350 3200 CAS14 £380

My next build will be an i7-9700K + 1080Ti and I need enough space for Win10, DCS2.5, BMS4.33, Xplane11. Will stick with SATA SSDs until NvMe prices come down. Options: # 2x 500GB Samsung 860 Evo £75 + £75 # 2x 500GB Crucial MX500 £58 + £58 # 250GB Crucial MX500 + 1TB Crucial MX500 £43 + £113 # 1TB Crucial MX500 £113 Q1) Which is the best SSD config, OS + Sims or all on one? Q2) Is the 860 Evo going to be practically any faster than the MX500 on the SATA3 bus?

I'm also looking for a GSync 1440p 27" (or larger) display for under £600. My main sim is DCS2.5 so wondering if I should go TN rather than the slightly slower IPS? So far I was considering these Acer displays: Acer Predator XB271HU IPS 4ms £590 Acer Predator XB271HUA TN 1ms £584 In reviews I've seen apparently the Asus PG279Q has worse backlight bleed although apparently a more user friendly OSD menu.

OK so iIm going to stick with finding a 32GB 2x16 kit. -

I'd be happy with a 5GHz OC, As for the storage, NVMe are too expensive for what I need it for right now. Also I'd prefer to get a 1TB NvMe as the performance is lightly better than a 500GB one. (As for old school... I prefer an 8-speed to a 9-speed bicycle too!) -

OK so this is what I'm thinking on pulling the trigger on before Xmas: GREEN = already owned CPU i7-9700K £400 H/S Noctua NH-D15 £80 GPU EVGA GTX 1080Ti FTW3 RAM G.Skill Trident Z 32GB (2x16) 3200MHz CL14-14-14-34 £405 M/B Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Elite £163 Storage Samsung 860 Evo 500GB £72 Samsung 860 Evo 500GB £72 1TB SATA2 HD PSU Corsair RM750x £90 Case Anidees AI8 Full Tower Case £90 Display Acer Predator XB271HU 27" GSync IPS £600 Controllers Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS £110 CH Rudder Pedals TrackIR Other stuff Windows 10 Home Retail £100 X-rite i1 Display Pro monitor calibrator £178 Display Port 1.4 cable 3m £10 = £2370 Re the Aorus Elite, it has the same VRM as the Aorus Pro and Ultra and I'm not looking for an extreme OC. Q) What do you think? Q) Should I wait until after Xmas (I think I might get a better deal on the Thrustmaster HOTAS)? __________________
