Another jagged edge thread

Hello all,While on a business trip it appears a new ATI driver was released so I finally got around to downloading it today. For my ATI 4870, it appears to be version 8.791.0.0.After installing, I've certainly noticed an improvement in 3d cloud impact, however one thing did jump out at me. I'm suddenly seeing jagged edges, specifically around taxiways, my aircraft, and buildings in windowed mode. This is true for both FS9 and FSX. Previously, I was able to run both in windowed mode (where I typically see the best performance over full screen mode) with smooth edges. After about 3 hours of exploring with CCC and in-game settings, I just can't seem to restore my smooth edges in windowed mode; however, smooth edges appear in full screen mode. The jagged edges subsequently result in some shimmering. I read a brief post about how recent ATI drivers simply cannot have jagged edges removed in windowed mode, can anyone confirm this? I've tried assorted settings with both ATI AA/AF and FS, but by default (and previously) have had ATI universal-controlled AA settings over application. While, generally, I'm willing to sacrifice some quality for performance...little things, like knowing I was able to previously have smooth edges in windowed mode, annoy the heck out of me to no end (just my personality I suppose :( )If anyone could provide me any insight, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much.

Also, regardless of any kind of FS AA setting, I can't seem to get it to kick in while in windowed mode (even with application control enabled in CCC). I'll try to post a screenshot tomorrow.

There's a thread about this in the hardware and drivers forum. Basically AA is currently broken in FS9 and FSX for windowed mode with the Catalyst drivers. The last driver that worked was v10-7. I suggest you install this one until AMD/ATI get around to fixing it. ;)

How does it impact 3d cloud performance? I would gladly trade straight edges for better 3d cloud performance like this driver has...but getting rid of jagged edges would be a nicety I hope down the road in windowed mode. And do you have a link for that older driver?

Was kind of hoping for a direct link to a known-working source. That comes up with several sites with different release dates (and subversions) of 10.7.

Sorry, not to be rude, but why is this so difficult? :( http://support.amd.c...x?〈=English I noticed your signature...Why 2 GPU´s? SLI is useless in FSX...You need to clock that i7 up to around 4.2 Ghz to get the best out of FSX.Have you read and used this information?http://www.simforums.com/forums/topic34141_post198187.html#198187
Not to be rude in return but that site yields the following for me:
An error occurred while processing your request.Reference #97.2cfaead1.1290839854.136c905

Otherwise, yes indeed, not difficult at all. But difficult, for me, to track the older driver from a reliable site that other ATI simmers use. Perhaps you don't think so, but perhaps I'm not as video card savvy for what I specifically need...as I cited above, there are multiple 10.7s with different subversions and dates it appears, hence my confusion since I cannot seem to access AMD's site at this time. :( And no, I do not have two video cards, that is the full name of the card I have...likely because of the processor I would assume. I also use it for non-FS graphics purposes. But this post is to hopefully have me further understand the behavior of this latest ATI driver and hopefully understand the impact on AA and my jagged edges. So I'd like to keep it focused on that. :( Thanks.Sent from my mobile

I give up...The link is working, dunno what you do wrong, maybe try from a PC.dry.gif Your ATI card is not good with FSX, if you read the advise from NickN you´ll understand.Good luck...

I have read it, thanks for the reminder. But as I alluded to above I also use my card for non-FS applications and procuring another card (nVidia) is not a financially or practically viable solution at this juncture, I'd like to troubleshoot what I have.Regards.Is there anyone else out there that might be able to provide a little bit of insight on these v10-7 drivers by any chance? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

CKD,why dont you simply (re-)install the older drivers?Uninstall new drivers, use "Driver Sweeper" to delete all remains of the ATI driver, reinstall old/working driver. Alternatively, use tweaker tools like atitool/rivatuner and try to force the AA.G.

The problem with my old driver is that I would get 6fps or so when looking at 3d clouds. I don't want my old driver back. I installed an ATI driver dated 22 Oct which greatly improves my performance with 3d clouds but creates jagged aircraft edges in windowed mode. I'm hearing bits of information about some kind of v10-7 driver that had working AA (smooth edges) in windowed mode with reasonable 3d cloud performance. The essence of my post is: can someone confirm that v10-7 indeed had working AA in windowed mode and reasonable 3d cloud performance and if so, could you be kind enough to provide me a direct link to the specific driver because the AMD site is not loading for me.I can further clarify if needed, hopefully that makes sense. Again, I have no desire to revert to my previous driver...I'm just trying to understand if there is a way (driver) that currently exists that has working windowed AA and good 3d cloud performance, that's all.

I seemed to have found a v10.7 on another site and went ahead and installed it. While AA seems to be working (e.g. no jagged edges), my 3d cloud performance is just as bad as previously. So I've rolled back to the previous version I had installed and reinstalled v10.11. While this improves 3d clouds greatly, it does indeed seem I can't find a way to get AA working to remove the jagged edges.
