Quest Kodiak landing (flaps)

Featured Replies

I am totally into the Quest Kodiak again. Great airplane. I do wonder about the landings though, and specifically the flaps. The thing is: as soon as I go to full flaps I immediately have to give full throttle. And I have to keep it full until touchdown. When I lower throttle a little, the plane seems to sink towards the ground. Flare is hard too, because I have to reduce the throttle just a few inches above the ground: if I do it earlier, I land way too hard. My approach speed is 100 and at landing at less than 90 is hard to do.Is this normal for this plane...? The speed isn't a problem because I am down to zero with reverse thrust in no time, but somehow it feels a bit odd.EDITP.S. This tendency to sink does have its advantages: I just ended a flight in which I discovered too late the destination airport was almost underneath me. In any other plane I would have to go around and do a circuit, but with the Kodiak I just pulled back the throttle, set flaps to full and I was at the right approach altitude in absolutely no time, without even a hint of overspeeding... I really like this plane...!!! :(

What is your landing weight? It sounds as if you still have too much fuel onboard while landing.

No need to go full throttle unless landing on a short strip, and do it at the last minute or when you need to descend fast.

Did you mean to say that there is no need to go full flaps? If not then I am confused.Todd

Sorry yes full flaps.

:( O boy... I usually fly a plane for a few weeks or even months and stick with it. For this reason I have (quite) a few default flights. This way I do not have to setup every flight from scratch: certain things are saved the way I want them, so (of instance) I don't have to set the fuel everytime... So right now I am flying the Kodiak, doing very short hops in PNW (no need to change fuel, time of day, season, etc. etc.). Well, so I thought... I just noticed I used the wrong default flight to set up this one, so my tanks are full all the way...! I forgot to set it to 30% and save it... Stupid me. :( Thanks for making me see the very obvious. :(

Not to worry, as it happens to all of us at one time or another. It's a pity that the fueling system is so weak to be an "all or nothing" situation. It would have been nice to have been able to request x pounds of fuel be delivered... ;)
