Better falling snow depiction for FSX?

Featured Replies

I'm a dedicated FSX user and I haven't flown FS9 in many years, but one thing I remember about FS9 was the way falling snow was depicted, and if memory serves, it was a lot better than the way it's depicted in FSX. The FSX falling snow effect really leaves a lot to be desired, especially when you're sitting on the tarmac waiting for takeoff clearance. If you've seen the effect in both FSX and FS9, I think you'll agree. Anyone know of an "enhancement" to the FSX falling snow depiction, either payware or freeware? Thanks.

Unfortunately at this time there isn't really anything that can be done about the snow effects. This has also been asked on the REX forum a few times and once by myself as well. A fellow just asked a few days ago on the REX forum as a matter of fact and Tim said "We will most likely not be touching the shaders involving the snow effect. Sorry"I'm sure if it was a shader effect someone would have already come up with an alternative by now, but as I understand it, messing with the way the snow effect works could basically break the way something else get rendered. It's too bad, because the snow effects are about the only thing I dont like about FSX, but after a while you get used to it. Hopefully in Flight they will do a better job with the snow.

IMHO, the visuals while airborne are best depicted by FSX' native rain. When flying through snow, the view outside the flight deck window is one of streaming lines of precipitation (just like rain) although a bit more reflective and slightly larger. It creates an amazing sensation of velocity. I don’t think shader modification is necessarily required to achieve the desired realism. We need to find a way of communicating (lying) to FSX so that rain is depicted when the sim is in significant motion. For relatively static ops, I can live with the FSX snow effects. For significant motion it is a realism killer for sure.
