Nice, Expensive, and limited in utility by Microsoft's 4.8M per pixel. As always, textures viewed from a distance looks ok but at about 1000ft from the texture they blur and the expensive systems will not fix that.Let's see if I stop buying food for three months I can get one.Dick KLBE

I think I would have to consider dropping some bucks on that PFC screen if I could anywhere near afford it! (And of course, if it works WELL!)

That PFC screen is the type of concept I've been hoping for. I imagine it is going to be priced in the "if you have to ask..." range. To be brutaly honest, I don't know if this sort of stuff is worth it though unless you are prepared to spent the money to get the full 360 degree wrap around version. Only then have you *really* bumped up the realism stakes, because you can then use your eyes and head roughly in the same way you would reality (although I guess it does not work upwards or downwards). With the standard version, though, it's only roughly cinematic aspect ratio. Still, that's alot better than 4 x 3, and in comparison to that Bugeye thingy, it's not broken down into visual segments.

Went to the Bugeye site, like the idea of multi-faceted windows but can't see how the standard sim panel shape would work on those hexagonal displays. You'd either have to have the thing out of ratio or put it on a separate monitor out front, in whcih case the perspective becomes less useful as much of what is being displayed on the megabucks screen wuoldn't be seen from a normal cockpit anyway. Also looked at the Virtual Image Monitor. Isn't that just a Fresnel lens in a box..? That's a LOT of money for a Fresnel lens in a box!Think the PFC solution looks better and is more practical. But whenever there's no price shown you just KNOW you can't afford it!Allcott

So what ever has happend to virtual gogles that have been promised for years, but have never really come to fruition. That seems like the best way to get your virtual world in 360 degrees.

I suppose bigger is better, but consider the way you watch television. you might be fortunate enough to have a large screen projection or plasma TV. But, chances are, if you happen to be elsewhere where only a smaller screen is available, you probably become completely immersed in good programming, unconsciously forgetting about screen size. It's the same with FS, imo. When you are in a fluid situation without regard to the medium, the message is what really matters, Marshall McLuan not withstanding...Sherm

It seems that all VR headsets (virtual googles) cause eyestrain or headaches to some extent. That's probably why they never really took off.The number one thing I hate about flightsims is the TOTAL lack of situational awareness especially when approaching an airfield and landing.Peripheral vision while landing is critical especially when you can't see over the dash during flare as is the case in a lot of GA aircraft.Virtual cockpits don't even come close.Try doing some proper aerobatics and you quickly realise how limited your vision is in flight sims.A proper 180 -> 240 degree wrap around view is the answer but I think it's going to be a while before we can get affordable ones. The processing power to display between 7168 and 9216 x 768 pixels (7-9 monitors wide) can only be done by multiple PCs and graphics cards at the moment. Also there is always an issue with join lines/seams even with special projected displays. However a solution may possibly come from flexible LCD technology. You can wrap and join the screens with no visible seam at all because they are only 0.3-0.4 mm thick! Here is a picture of a small flexible LCD.http://www.nature.com/nsu/030505/images/paper_180.jpgThere are a lot of major players (Toshiba - to name one) who are busy working on the technology.Paul

I borrowed a projector from work a few months back and projected the image on a wall with two cardboard panels on the side at about a 30-45 degree angle giving a sort of wrap around field of view. I also set the zoom view in MSFS to about 50. The experience was pretty awsome, so I am saving up to get a projector, which will be used for an outside view and will set up a couple of monitors to be utilized as the aircraft panel. By the way, projectors with a 1024x768 resolution should be dropping under $1,000 by mid-next year and in fact a couple are almost there. Regarding head mounted displays(HMD's), I spoke with an industry insider recently and he stated that the production of micro displays used for HMD's is low due to lack of demand. Therefore the price is high. Also, the resolution is low, 800x600, which is usually not acceptable for the flight simmer. Higher res models are available, but they are extremely expensive and used typically for military or medical applications. My thought is sometime within the next 5-10 years, many, many, many flight simmers will have a projector and will experience a completely different dimension of flight sim, and other simulation and gaming titles. Last point, they are great for watching chick movies if your wife gives you too much grief about spending the money for only flight simming. (also great for sports and non-chick movies)
