October 27, 200322 yr Ok, I know that this should probably be posted in the Hardware Forum, which it will also be posted there, but this forum is much more active...I just received a Sapphire Radeon 9800 non-pro 128MB from Newegg....its an OEM version, therefore no instruction manual, there are 2 cables for power coming off the card...I know at least one gets plugged in but what about the other, I'm quite new in this area but I'm sure you can tell or I wouldn't be posting, so where does the other one plug into, they have male and female ends, thanks!Danny[a href=http://library.avsim.net/search.php?CatID=Root&SearchTerm=danny%2Bfritsche&Sort=Added&ScanMode=0&Go=Change+View" target="_blank]My Work.[/a]"Joooooooerb!- Coach ZIntel P4 2.4GHz - Asus P4PE Mobo - Crucial 512MB PC2700 DDR - 128MB Sapphire Radeon 9800 & Dell Inspiron 1100 Notebook - 2.2Ghz Celeron
October 28, 200322 yr Author Hi Danny,I assume when you state "2 cables for power coming off the card" that you mean 1 cable with two connectors. As far as I can recall, without reopening my box to look, there is a power connector from the fan that is plugged directly into the Radeon's board. On my board there is also a standard female molex connector fixed to the top of the board at the back. Just plug the appropriate connector on the lead into this one and the other should be connected to a spare 12v molex connector off your PSU (power supply unit). Without this the card won't work. Before doing any of this make sure your motherboard will take this card. Earlier motherboards have a higher voltage to the AGP socket and are not compatible with your card. So please make sure before attempting installation.Mike
October 28, 200322 yr Here is a pic of my card...I had someone tell me to plug the one into a PS connector, that one was the cards male connector into the PSU's female connector...the fan, I dunno...it IS plugged into the card...but I dunno what to do, I'm quite frustrated at this point...here is the pichttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/45557.jpgDanny[a href=http://library.avsim.net/search.php?CatID=Root&SearchTerm=danny%2Bfritsche&Sort=Added&ScanMode=0&Go=Change+View" target="_blank]My Work.[/a]"Joooooooerb!- Coach ZIntel P4 2.4GHz - Asus P4PE Mobo - Crucial 512MB PC2700 DDR - 128MB Sapphire Radeon 9800 & Dell Inspiron 1100 Notebook - 2.2Ghz Celeron
October 28, 200322 yr OK, the top one in your photo (female) gets connected to a male connector coming from your power supply. The other one (male) just hangs there to be used if you need to hook up something else to power. It's just a pass-through.Does that help?
October 28, 200322 yr Author Ah, now I understand your confusion. One is a male connector (the extension) and the other is the female connector (the one at the top of the picture). Just plug a spare male connector from your PSU into the female connector and ignore the other connector. That's how these standard molex leads are supplied.Hope your clear now.Mike
October 28, 200322 yr well, thanks guys, but bad news, all I have are females coming outta the PSU! oh no! Also, have just noticed that this card is 8xAGP and my Asus P4PE is only 4X!!! I hope I dont have to get a new board, can the card not just run at 4X instead, I really dont know much in this area as you can tell.Danny[a href=http://library.avsim.net/search.php?CatID=Root&SearchTerm=danny%2Bfritsche&Sort=Added&ScanMode=0&Go=Change+View" target="_blank]My Work.[/a]"Joooooooerb!- Coach ZIntel P4 2.4GHz - Asus P4PE Mobo - Crucial 512MB PC2700 DDR - 128MB Sapphire Radeon 9800 & Dell Inspiron 1100 Notebook - 2.2Ghz Celeron
October 28, 200322 yr HI Danny, I have a Asus P4PE mb and I use the 9700 which is 8x agp. Your 9800 will work fine with it. You should be able to find one of the cables in your PC, comming from your power supply that you may have to disconnect and plug in one of the cables coming off of your 9800 and then use the other cable coming off of your 9800 to plug into the other cable that you disconnected. You will be able to do this.Ron
October 28, 200322 yr Whew...I feel stupid at this point, I'm so glad to hear that you are using an 8X card on the 4X P4PE...I'm gonna power down and look around in there again and see what I can find, you're right, there HAS to be a connector in there that WILL work! Thanks I'll report back.Danny[a href=http://library.avsim.net/search.php?CatID=Root&SearchTerm=danny%2Bfritsche&Sort=Added&ScanMode=0&Go=Change+View" target="_blank]My Work.[/a]"Joooooooerb!- Coach ZIntel P4 2.4GHz - Asus P4PE Mobo - Crucial 512MB PC2700 DDR - 128MB Sapphire Radeon 9800 & Dell Inspiron 1100 Notebook - 2.2Ghz Celeron
October 28, 200322 yr That cable is an adapter of sorts, its there just for such a case as somebody who has no spare cables. What you do is take an existing cable from a Hard Drive/CD-ROM,etc, and connect that to your 9800. Then take the split part of the cable and run that to whatever component you originally had connected to your PSU.
October 28, 200322 yr Well...I have tried different connections...every was connected to the PSU at some point, but when I power on, my monitor is just in the self-test mode...green light on....the self test logo bouncing around the screen. :( I dunno what to do now.Danny[a href=http://library.avsim.net/search.php?CatID=Root&SearchTerm=danny%2Bfritsche&Sort=Added&ScanMode=0&Go=Change+View" target="_blank]My Work.[/a]"Joooooooerb!- Coach ZIntel P4 2.4GHz - Asus P4PE Mobo - Crucial 512MB PC2700 DDR - 128MB Sapphire Radeon 9800 & Dell Inspiron 1100 Notebook - 2.2Ghz Celeron
October 28, 200322 yr Well, I think I may just have to send this card back, I had the power cords hooked in to the PSU and then to my HD...I booted up, still no screen at all, just my monitor self-test screen, but while it was running, I could hear my HD's spinning...I checked and the fan on my Radeon was working, so its got power...I reset my BIOS to defaults, and still nothing, I'm thinking I may just have a faulty card, this is where it gets a little interesting. After I got my card yesterday, the board is Black, the one in the pic at newegg was red...I was reading on the Sapphire forums that this happened to some other people who ordered the card from Newegg...I guess the black board is an older one and is based on the 9700 or something like that...well, when I ordered this card, Newegg said no returns, only exchange for same item...well, I look back on their website, the card is not even listed anymore! #####...I guess I need to call them and see what the hell we are gonna do, in the meantime, I am waiting back for an email from ATI that I sent for help, but to me, I think I just have a bad video connection on the card perhaps (sigh) anwyay, thanks to you guys that tried to help, maybe there are some other things that I can try but I seem to be out of options.Danny[a href=http://library.avsim.net/search.php?CatID=Root&SearchTerm=danny%2Bfritsche&Sort=Added&ScanMode=0&Go=Change+View" target="_blank]My Work.[/a]"Joooooooerb!- Coach ZIntel P4 2.4GHz - Asus P4PE Mobo - Crucial 512MB PC2700 DDR - 128MB Sapphire Radeon 9800 & Dell Inspiron 1100 Notebook - 2.2Ghz Celeron
October 28, 200322 yr Do NOT send the card back... you're not doing somthing right. You see the one that is closest to the TOP there, plug that into a FEMALE Connector on the PSU if you have ONE freeone left even, do not go through the HD!
October 28, 200322 yr Hmmm, I believe I have done that already, only plugging one into the female of the PSU..will try again in a bit, but I'm losing hope quickly...thanks for the suggestion.Danny[a href=http://library.avsim.net/search.php?CatID=Root&SearchTerm=danny%2Bfritsche&Sort=Added&ScanMode=0&Go=Change+View" target="_blank]My Work.[/a]"Joooooooerb!- Coach ZIntel P4 2.4GHz - Asus P4PE Mobo - Crucial 512MB PC2700 DDR - 128MB Sapphire Radeon 9800 & Dell Inspiron 1100 Notebook - 2.2Ghz Celeron
