January 14, 201115 yr Don't bother with SSDs. Stick to my 1155 system, and treat yourself to a Yoke/joystick etc. One thing I would do however, is look at the prices I have down, and compare with the OCuK prices. I didn't look at them because of your past experiences. You could probably save £100 by buying some parts from OCUK.
January 14, 201115 yr Author Hi,Why not bother with SSD's? My mate has one of them and they are amazingly fast compared to standard hard drives. They will also be quicker than the caviar black and vrap according to the internet. What do you think to this spec as the memory will run at 1.45v so fine with sandybridge , also i will have one ssd for main windows , 1 just dedicated for fsx and then the 2x1tb for my music/photos etc etc
January 14, 201115 yr Check the dimensions of that case. Do a quick google to make sure the 570 will fit inside it. I think the 570 is ~10.4" long? With SSDs, 1x120GB will be enough for FSX and Windows. It doesn't matter that they are together when on an SSD as there is no moving parts etc etc.Other than that, that looks fine. If you only go for one SSD, get another 4GB of that ram. It'll stop any chance of OOMs
January 14, 201115 yr Author Hi,So 1x120gb would be enough for windows 7 ultimate and fsx with all the addons? If so then thats perfect as i could have 2x1tb hd for my storage. Will check the case out now. WIll post back in a bit with the final spec hopefully and will go and get it tomorrowMatt
January 14, 201115 yr OS is normally 20-30GB. So that leaves 90-100GB for FSX. As long as you don't put too many large photoscenery addons on there, it will fit fine.
January 14, 201115 yr Author Right....Going to go for this. Just read a few reviews on them Momentus hybrid drives and they are supposed to be really fast , not as fast as ssd but alot faster than vrap and others. 500gb will be more than enough for windows and fsx...

January 14, 201115 yr Chris has been banned for two weeks for being obnoxious in other threads so you wont get a reply from him.Ditch the momentous drive they really are junk, do not be mesmerised by the marketing snake oil, it's bo**ocks.8Gb of RAM would be my recommendation too and stick to the low voltage stuff where Sandy Bridge is concerned. The rest of the system looks OK, do not get a power supply any less than 700 watts, especially if you are going with one of the cheaper brands.EDIT: RE the memory you should be buying matched sets, just buying 2x the quantity doesn't guarantee good results. Cheers, Andy.
January 14, 201115 yr Looks great but I honestly would go with the 2600K if you want the best overclock results. With regards to the powersupply I think it's fine you really don't need much if you aren't planning to SLi.
January 14, 201115 yr What makes you think the I7 2600K will overclock better than the I5 2500K?Good question. I would expect them to OC pretty much the same. The only difference seems to be cache size. Is this assumption correct?
January 14, 201115 yr Good question. I would expect them to OC pretty much the same. The only difference seems to be cache size. Is this assumption correct?Yes, the 2MB of L3 cache and Hyperthreading. Also the IGP is less powerfull in the I5 2500K, but none of us will be using it in a p67 chipset board anyway
January 14, 201115 yr Author Hi,So would me buying a mega fast processor, ram etc be any use if the hard drive isnt going to be any good?Perhaps i could tweak the system allowing me to buy a bigger ssd drive for windows and fsx?Matt
January 15, 201115 yr Hi,So would me buying a mega fast processor, ram etc be any use if the hard drive isnt going to be any good?Perhaps i could tweak the system allowing me to buy a bigger ssd drive for windows and fsx?MattHi,Just read through your thread here. Sounds a solid system you're going to get. In reply to your question, I believe that a slower hard drive, ie conventional 7200RPM, will only increase sim loading and texture loading times. I believe that having a slower drive will only bottleneck performance slightly, but not drastically. Please correct me if I'm incorrect.
January 16, 201115 yr Hi,Just read through your thread here. Sounds a solid system you're going to get. In reply to your question, I believe that a slower hard drive, ie conventional 7200RPM, will only increase sim loading and texture loading times. I believe that having a slower drive will only bottleneck performance slightly, but not drastically. Please correct me if I'm incorrect.I would agree with you. I have a 7200 rpm drive now and even though my other hardware is great, scenery is still blurry except for very close (right under) to the aircraft. This is because the 7200 rpm cant load the textures fast enough. I would go with a 120 gb SSD for fsx and OS, and then have a 7200 rpm drive to install general programs on. Also note the differences in read/write times between drive sizes! For example, a 120 gb SSD will get ~285 read and ~275 write. A 128 gb SSD will only get ~175 read and ~125 write. Huge difference! It is the same for 60 gb v. 64 gb. I don't know the reason for this, but it seems that if you go from a standard to an odd ball size, the read/write times go down sharply.* Sorry for grammar, capitalization, and punctuation......I'm typing on the iPhone.
