Simconnect.xml and ini files

Featured Replies

Hi,Win7 - FSX Server(2) XP clientsI am using ASE on a client and have installed the simconnect.xml and simconnect.ini in the server directories noted in the ASE documentation. I use MyTraffic X on the FSX server. It does have occurences of these 2 files in multiple directories which would seem that X could be installed on a client and these files are not being used currently.I have been using ASE but I found a product called OpenClouds which does not have all the features but works very well in my opinion. I am looking at OpenClouds because of its smaller footprint. What confused me is that I uninstalled ASE on the client and installed OpenClouds, and it communicated with the server right out of the box, where ASE required the xml and the ini files to be placed in the proper directories on the server. So either OpenClouds is looking for these 2 files in the same place as ASE or it is finding them somewhere else. I guess I am just trying to understand these two files and their placement on the server with respect to each product that will use them. Would it be possible that each product on a client that uses simconnect, have these 2 files placed in completely different directories as other products? If this is true, then why would there not be a standard, and place these to files in one place and each product use this location? Also, MyTraffic X, although not on a client used port 2024 in their example files, but ASE uses Port 500. Can multiple products use the same port, or is it best or mandatory that each product use a different port assignment? I guess you can see my confusion. I am just trying to get a handle on the simconnect stuff so I feel confident when problems arise. Any help would be very much appreciated.RegardsBob

Those two files are used by the SimConnect server (ie FSX itself) and not the clients. You only need to place those two files on the server machine if you want to use SimConnect clients over the network - a SimConnect client running on the same machine as FSX can connect without these files existing (ie the local ports are always opened, but the network ports require configuration). The file that controls the client is the SimConnect.cfg file (and just to be extra annoying, this file can exist in 3 different possible directories) and specifies which IP address/Port number to connect to.Tim

Hi Tim,, thanks for the reply.Just a little clarification if you have time.1. Can or should 2 different addons use the same port numbers in the cfg? 2. If the client addon does not specify a location for the simconnect server files then..... I know of 2 locations where these can be, both are in the Document and Settings folder beneath (ASE specified those 2 locations), where is the other location you mentioned, maybe the FSX folder?2. After uninstalling ASE and installing OpenClouds, even though I did not place the xml or cfg simconnect files on my server when installing OpenClouds, it must have used the existing cfg and xml file still residing on my server either left by ASE or another product which did not get uninstalled?3. Why does ASE use the file simconnect.ini rather than simconnect.cfg?4. This is the Simconnect.msi version that I installed on my clients:SimConnect Client v10.0.61259.0 ---- I understand that there are 3 versions of this installer. Can clients use this version with every addon or do I need specific versions for some reason?RegardsBob

Bob:I would like to run Open Clouds on my client, but, haven't been able to get things setup so Open Clouds on the client PC will recognize and connect wiht FSX on the server PC. Are you still using OC on your client? If so, would you share your setup?ThanksDanny
