GTX 460 Arrived....

Featured Replies

Got a Newegg gift card and decided to upgrade my graphics card. Now I've got some issues to sort out. :Sigh: I'm using the latest driver from Nvidia having problems in FSX. What happens is that I load up a free flight session and the sim will just lock up. No blue screen, but I have to reset the computer. When Windows comes back up, it states that it has recovered from an error and the error details state "blue screen." Sometimes it freezes instantly and sometimes I can take off and fly a few minutes before the freeze. I have monitored temps and my card never goes above 60 degrees and my processor never breaks 50 degrees. There are no graphical glitches or artifacts, etc. before the problem rears its ugly head. Problem started when I swapped the ATI 4870 for the GTX 460. (Did a reformat for the 460 install.) I was using Nvidia Inspector with Ryan's (Tabs) instructions, for what it's worth. Here is what I've tried so far:1) Undid my overclock and went to all stock settings. Problem persists.2) Installed an older Nvidia driver. Problem persists.3) Uninstalled Nvidia Inspector. (I think this can just get deleted to uninstall?) Problem persists.I redid my overclock and am considering going back to my ATI 4870. I am reformatting now and will try a clean install with the older driver in case there are some remnants that might be causing an issue. I'll put my specs below, but all seem to be working fine outside of FSX. Hope someone has an idea for me to try! The IQ and lack of shimmering sure beat the ATI, but these problems are making me regret going back to Nvidia all over again. More info. After another complete reformat and reinstall of FSX, I still have the same issue. I was monitoring GPU activity on the last crash.GPU Temp: 49GPU Usage: 32Fan Speed: 30 (Set to AUTO)Fan RPM: 1290This card is not even breaking a sweat during the FSX crash. I think I must have a defective card. My PSU should be plenty for one 460 and I would think the ATI 4870 would be close or maybe even worse on power draw.Blue screen error details:Problem signature: Problem Event Name: BlueScreen OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3 Locale ID: 1033Additional information about the problem: BCCode: 124 BCP1: 0000000000000000 BCP2: FFFFFA80049A68F8 BCP3: 0000000000000000 BCP4: 0000000000000000 OS Version: 6_1_7600 Service Pack: 0_0 Product: 768_1I was hoping to finish my diagnosis and next decision today while I have a bit of free time. Are there any Nvidia-based FSX cfg tweaks that are a must have to prevent lockups? I am running vanilla FSX SP1, SP2 install with only display settings in the game altered. Also, I was just running default Nvidia Control Panel with default settings.I can return this to Newegg since I just got this on Friday. I feel pretty disappointed at this point with Nvidia/EVGA. Not sure if I should go back to ATI shimmering with a problem-free sim experience or if I should get a refund and use another Nvidia product.I'm open to suggestions. Thanks,Scott

So much input here this weekend. :Rolling Eyes: After spending much of my weekend troubleshooting, I have come to determine that this is 100% a faulty video card. I reinstalled my old EVGA 8800 GTS and used the current Nvidia driver and no problems in FSX. Of course performance on an old card with 320MB of memory is not that great, but no freezes with the same driver that I tried with my 460.I reinstalled my ATI 4870 again. I have a serious decision to make about what to do with my defective product. Get a refund or get another make of an Nvidia card? Or maybe a better ATI card? I think I should maybe try the GTX 470 and hope for better luck. "Luck" is a sensitive word to use regarding anything EVGA it seems these days. This EVGA 460 was a dud, my EVGA 260 failed and I RMA'd it. Got a dead on arrival when they replaced it, then got a working one. What a hassle. EVGA has seen the last of me. I feel they have serious quality control issues and that they use a "lifetime warranty" to comfort buyers.Nvidia products seem to be the preference for flight sim, but here's my take on it. ATI cards have excellent image quality, but a poor shimmering/filtering issue. After trying these Nvidia cards this weekend, they are the same or worse unless Inspector or Nhancer is used. So I think this Nvidia/ATI debate is really more equal than people mention. All ATI needs to be a major flight sim power is driver refinements - something they don't seem to want to focus on. If a third party app (like Inspector) was available for ATI cards, I'd choose ATI.Seriously, I advise people to stay away from EVGA right now. My first card was my EVGA 8800 GTS and it still works to this day. They got off to a great start with me. But that's all I have that is positive about them. RMAs are no fun, waiting for shipping and being unable to use your computer. While it's nice to have the comfort of a parts replacement, you still are out the shipping costs. Luckily Newegg will help me since this is a newly purchased product. I'd personally rather have a card that is dependable and dies a slow death. Cards should not arrive dead on multiple occasions and they should last longer than a year without having to warranty them out. EVGA = Epicfail Videocards Going Around.

It's not up to inspector / nHancer or the likes to enable combined modes. If the driver does not implement those no third party software will. ATI keeps refusing to do so for flight simmers so I say screw them. It's not only that, many drivers suffer from buggy AF and if it wasn't for Jesús Vsync would also be missing for ATI/AMD users. If you're not happy with EVGA I would get a 460 replacement of a different brand. I'm very happy with my gigabyte. It's an awesome overclocker and runs very cool & silent

I'm looking up your Gigabyte and the Asus as well. Hmm....my vsync works in FSX without any of the tweaks by *******. (In the ATI 10.9 release.) The filtering could sure be better for FSX, though. That's a biggie for me. I have contacted ATI multiple times about including FSX in their driver refinements, but they never respond. They seem to focus on the latest RP and FPS games that are out. <_<I think the 460 meets my needs and should be fine for FSX. It's a good price/performance card. Maybe just bad luck for the 3rd time with EVGA? I don't know. Both EVGA cards that have let me down are "factory superclocked" models. My original 8800 GTS was not and still works to this day. Maybe I should just try avoiding EVGA's superclocked stuff going forward and see how that goes. They do make things right when they have to, so that's why I consider giving them more opportunities.Scott

Low gpu usage comes from the system not feeding it, so the bottle neck is somewhere else, cpu? ram?Bjorn

Newegg set me up with an RMA and cross-shipped me a new card identical to the one I was having the issue with. Got the replacement today. Initial use so far seems to indicate no further issues! I'm using Inspector with the recommended adjustments. Distant objects no longer shimmer like they did with the 4870! Have not done any long flights yet, but so far it's looking good. I really hope this EVGA card serves me for a long time. Maybe just bad luck or damage during shipment. Thanks to those who provided suggestions. Scott
