What are the names of the water textures for FS9? Please advise and thanks!Mark

From fs9watga3.zip replacement textures (readme):1. Back up the following 11 files from your Scenery\World\texture folder so you can replace the defaults if required:Env_dawn.bmpEnv_dusk.bmpEnv_highmoon.bmpEnv_highnoon.bmpEnv_lowmoon.bmpEnv_lowsun.bmpEnv_midsun.bmpEnv_newmoon.bmpEnv_overcast.bmpEnv_postdusk.bmpEnv_predawn.bmp Back up the following file from your main Texture folder so you can replace the default if required:OceanHeightField.bmp

Those are environment files and control things like the reflections on the water, the actual water textures are named more like ground textures but with "wa" in the filename. This isn't necessarily a conclusive list of every water texture used by the sim, just the ones I overwrite with add on files (from morewatr.zip by Kevin Rangel):001b2wa1.bmp002b2wa1.bmp003b2wa1.bmp004b2wa1.bmp005b2wa1.bmp006b2wa1.bmp007b2wa1.bmp008b2wa1.bmp009b2wa1.bmp010b2wa1.bmp011b2wa1.bmp013b2wa1.bmp014b2wa1.bmp015b2wa1.bmp016b2wa1.bmp017b2wa1.bmp018b2wa1.bmp019b2wa1.bmp020b2wa1.bmp021b2wa1.bmp022b2wa1.bmp023b2wa1.bmp024b2wa1.bmp025b2wa1.bmp026b2wa1.bmp027b2wa1.bmp028b2wa1.bmp029b2wa1.bmp030b2wa1.bmp031b2wa1.bmp032b2wa1.bmp033b2wa1.bmp034b2wa1.bmp035b2wa1.bmp036b2wa1.bmp037b2wa1.bmp038b2wa1.bmp039b2wa1.bmp040b2wa1.bmp041b2wa1.bmp042b2wa1.bmp043b2wa1.bmp044b2wa1.bmp045b2wa1.bmp046b2wa1.bmp047b2wa1.bmp048b2wa1.bmp049b2wa1.bmp050b2wa1.bmp051b2wa1.bmp052b2wa1.bmp053b2wa1.bmp054b2wa1.bmp055b2wa1.bmp056b2wa1.bmp057b2wa1.bmp059b2wa1.bmp060b2wa1.bmpI also use addon variations of the env_ files listed above and a jazzed up copy of Oceanheightfield.bmp. Note also that your sky textures play a big part in the overall appearance of your water, they control the color that's cast upon the water by ambient light.Jim

Thanks Jim. I was wondering about that. I have been trying out new water textures lately and they just weren't working out as well as I expected...and they used an automated installer. The color of the water was too blue or not blue enough and I decided that I liked the original FS9 textures better. I did backup my FS9 folder but when I went to restore the textures, I discovered that my backup was corrupted...yuck...a failing HDD with some bad blocks. So I'm forced to restore the files by hand. When I copied the files mentioned by dabbelju into FS9, the water didn't change back to the original colors, it stayed a very unreal blue color. So after further research, I did find all of those files that you mentioned and more in the Scenery\World\Texture folder. Fortunately for me, I have an original install of FS9.1 in offline storage that I can reference and fudge the original water textures back in. At least I want that to be the case.Anyway, I just did a reinstall of FS9 with the sole purpose of making water and sky changes, finding out the hidden things that seem to appear when you least expect them. If it wasn't for the failing HDD, this conversation might not have happened. But I'm glad it did because I keep learning new things about the sim and finally how to take a more informed approach on how it works.I'm assuming the FS9 Sky uses the same approach as the water and would like to broach that issue as well. If you, (or anyone else for that matter), have the time...What are the files that control the sky textures in both color and effect?Mark

It's actually just a few key pixels of each sky texture that control this. Here's a diagram thingy I made up, and this is based on what GEPro tells me these pixels control in GEPro's "colorize" dialog:environment_pixels.jpgIncidentally we're talking about the "sky_predawn1_0.bmp, sky_postdawn1_0.bmp, sky_afternoon_0.bmp", etc files found in the main FS9\Texture folder. There should be 140 of them. I've used the automate/batch functions in PhotoShop to modify these and am currently liking a set of HDE v1.0 sky textures that have had all their aircraft shadowing pixels lightened by about 20% which brightens up the sim considerably (maybe too much). If you want a real psychedelic treat copy the FSX sky textures into your FS9\Texture folder. They're 32 bit where the FS9 textures are 24 bit. Something about the alpha channel makes rainbow colors everywhere you look in FS9 :biggrin:Jim

Hello,

Thanks Jim. I was wondering about that. I have been trying out new water textures lately and they just weren't working out as well as I expected...and they used an automated installer
A automated installer can work in two ways :( The easy way B) The installer search for FS9.EXEEasy to fool .. just make a temporary folder and put in FS9.EXE .. and proceed the installationThe hard way B) The installer search the path of FS2004 in the registry baseThat's also easy to foolYou can use this tool....Flightsim.com
FS2004 (ACOF) - Misc.FS2004 TweakFS Path Utility[ Download | View ]Name: fs9pathu.zip Size: 593,179 Date: 08-10-2005 Downloads: 1,852FS2004 TweakFS Path Utility, v1.1. Features Repairs the FS2004 path in the Windows Registry; Checks the registry path for the FS9.exe file; Warns if the registry path is missing; Sets the registry path for the FS9.exe file; Warns if the FS9.exe is not in folder on clicking the "Set" button; Avoids the need to reinstall FS2004 in the event of registry corruption; Searches for the FS9 Reg key in the Windows RegEdit program.
Use it for modify the FS2004 path to point to the temporary folder you want to installProceed with installAfter install completed .. use again the tool for restore the correct FS2004 path in the registry base :( Never problems ... only solutions :( Regards.bye.gifGus.

Thanks Gus!!! You're always a help :) Now, I do have an empty folder structure for FS9.1 that I can point an automated installer at. I normally do that but this time I thought that I would be clever and simply make a backup of FS9.1 to make sure that the installer wasn't doing anything tricky. I've run into installers before that won't copy files if they don't find the original where it is supposed to be.So I had an old HDD laying around and decided to use it to simply make copies of the install and then break them out into individual pieces later. Much to my chagrin, I remembered why that old HDD was laying around a bit too late. It had bad blocks and corrupted my well thought out plan...duh on my part.Well, all's well that ends well. Jim showed me the where and the what. I've now got the original textures back in and can make a scientific approach as to the pathology on how mix and match water and sky...until satisfied. I wonder if that's possible :)Mark

That's really cool...I've saved it as a reference :) I did look and discovered the files which you've mentioned. Thanks for that as well. The veil of mystery is starting to lift and I can now start to mix and match water and sky. It really does prove to be important to know what to change in order to get the sim to look the way you want it to. I was flying out of KAVX and the water looked more blue then Hawaii. I've surfed L.A. for 30 years and have never seen water that blue there. It's always been like Maverick's up north...cold and green. Well regardless, thanks for the help Jim!Mark

One more thing here, (in case anyone needs this list or is interested), I've got 247 Sky Textures in my "Flight Simulator 9\Texture" folder. Ha! Really...good to know. I think I'd better have a look with XnView before I say something publicly next time. Thanks Jim :)Mark
