Joining airways

Featured Replies

I had a nice little flight today from NW Florida Beaches to Daytona Beach (I'm jealous for sunshine...) and with no SID to take from this fairly new airport I was pleasantly surprised to hear Tyndall Departure give me the following instruction as I was headed towards SZW to take jetway J2 eastward:

Climb and maintain one nine thousand join airway juliet two contact jacksonville center one one niner point one
Now it's one thing that the TTS engine allows controllers to refer to navaids by their "names" and not just by their IDs. E.g., Departure told me to "fly direct Seminole" and not "fly direct Sierra Zulu Whiskey." But this was a very nice extra that I hadn't anticipated. Has anyone encountered this before? I fly via lo- and hi-altitude airways a lot, but I don't recall being told to join one before.

This shows the flexibility of the engine in my eyes. I had those named airways more than a few times now and the navaids in some procedures are also named by their actual names and not abbreviations when you e. g. follow some STAR. VoxATC than defines some waypoint to report when passing and uses the name of an NDB or something like that. This waypoints then defines the change from Approach to Tower for example.Very nice feature in my eyes.

Not only that, but sometimes when I'm not too busy flying a departure (or just sitting at my stand) I swear that I can see / hear departing AI aircraft flying actual SIDs - not just the standard AI tactic of "takeoff and fly directly towards your destination a/p."
