February 26, 201115 yr I have a question relating to real world aviation. It is a stupid question, but it has been bugging me ever since. I've arrived in Sao Paulo in an Airbus A340-300 from TAP, and before landing, i heard two big THUDs. Well, the sound is comparable as to what you hear when you are inside a car, speeding on a highway and you pass over a small ondulation on the road. For example, when they are replacing the asphalt, and the difference between the new one and the old one, usually will have a few inches of a bump. Or when you go over a bridge, and there is a small space between the bridge and the main road. I have been mulling about this for a while, since I never heard it happening before.Does someone know what it could be?
February 26, 201115 yr Before you touched down? Perhaps the main gear locking into place, or the gear doors closing after gear extension? February 26, 201115 yr +1 on the gear (not the doors, they are of light metal and would not make the sound the OP describes).Cheers,- jahman.
February 27, 201115 yr Author I was thinking about the gears too, though that would be a first, since I've flown on A319, 737(200/300/400/800), 727, Dc-10, 777-200, Md-11, Fokker 100 and never heard that noise.

It's amazing how much difference 5-10 seats can make. Sam Crawford "Don't judge the intelligence of an individual by the number of posts that they have made. February 27, 201115 yr Commercial Member Well I guess it also depends on where abouts you sit. It's amazing how much difference 5-10 seats can make.Very true, same goes for the engine sound, sit in front of the engine's and it sounds like a completely different beast. Back to the landing gear, I was flying from Singapore to London a few years back on the 744, when they retracted the gear the sound of the gear doors and wheel brakes being applied was like a small bomb going of in the cargo section. I fly on the BA 744 OBBI-OTBD-OBBI once a week and it never sounds that bad so I guess you need to be sitting in a specific place right above the landing gear. Rob Prest
