The evils of the /3GB switch

Featured Replies

I put this post here because a lot of FSX users may have modified their boot.ini file to include this switch along with /USERVA. If it is the wrong place, I apologize.I run Windows XP with an Nvidia 8800GTX (768MB), Core 2 duo 4GB. I play a lot of games besides FSX, all kinds of games, some of which require a lot of CPU/GPU power. Games that I like stay on my system for quite a while and from time to time I go back to play them again. My system is about 3 years old and it has had many XP and driver updates, along with game updates during this time.At some point last year, I started to notice that some of the games that I used to have running on my system no longer run properly. The affected games are graphically demanding, such as Assassin's Creed, GTA IV, Far Cry 2. These games now hang or crash soon after starting up. At the time, I was blaming newer Nvidia drivers that always seem to break more things than they fix.Not that long ago I got GTA IV EFLC, and this game had the same issues, but this game is relatively new. I just could not get it to run, no matter what I tried and there were lots of people with the same issue. Then I came across a post that mentioned the /3GB switch as a culprit. I made this change to my boot.ini to give FSX better performance and this was some years ago and it made sense that it could be the problem.I removed the /3GB and /USERVA switches from my boot.ini file and ALL of the games that I had issues with now run as they did when I first played them years ago. EFLC runs as well. So, if you have had similar experiences with some of your games and you made the /3GB change, you may want to reverse it and see if this helps. If you don't know what I am talking about, you probably didn't fiddle with your boot.ini file, so ignore this post.

Um, why not just have two boot options? One for the /3gb switch one normal. I have 6 boot options, XP 32 no /3GB, XP 32 with 3GB, XP 32 test without /3GB, XP 32 test with /3GB and 2 XP 64 builds, one for FS9 and one for FSX...Good info but no need to do away with the /3GB switch, just give yourself an option to boot without it...

Which is precisely why the two Wiki articles I wrote on the subject recommends just that, and even provides examples of how to do so... :(
