March 5, 201115 yr I've been pondering upgrading my video card recently and was hoping for a little input. I understand that FSX is primarily CPU limited and this is where I seek guidance. I'm running an i7-920 overclocked to 3.5 GHz. This OC was limited by my 1333 MHz RAM and I just picked up some 1600 MHz RAM, so this will likely go to 3.8ish GHz soon. Even at 3.5 GHz, I'm fairly happy with performance being able to run complex A/C, scenery, AI and texture add-ons at least 15-20 FPS and usually around 30 FPS. However, I would love to remove some of those dips down in the 15 FPS region. These occur on the ground at busy 3rd party airports with complex payware aircraft. Certainly the overclock on the CPU will help, but might I expect to see any benefit if I upgrade from my GTX285 to a GTX4xx series? They certainly are getting fairly reasonable in price. March 5, 201115 yr From personal experience the 460 seems to do a fair bit better than the 285 (which was a diamond). I would recommend a superclocked or overclockable edition. For multi-monitor use go for the 2 gb edition, or go for it any way, almost same price. You won't get rid of your 15 fps frame drops though. Takes a sandy bridge system, it seems, to get the best performance. In time you may want to add improvements to your system. I'd recommend some ram with lower latencies like mine, 6-8-6-24, i.e. CAS or CL 6 or 7. Then an SSD, prices dropping too.
